    Total Gloat

I know that this i a total gloat, but there is a place you need to check if you lilke bargan wood.

Walnut shorts 5.75" wide, 1" thick, lengths are 12" to 32" long 160BF shipped to my door for $360.00, that is about 2.25 BF

I found it a www.westpennhardwoods.com in there closeout area. I have bought alot of wood for projects of late from them and can't say enough about them. This stack works for me, I am doing a bunch of small projects for me and it is good stock for that.

You did great! Thanks for showing us how nice the wood is. I talked to Westpenn once about ordering the load of cherry shorts, they were very friendly, but I got busy and didn't follow through with it. Next time I will!

Don't mean to rain on anybodies parade, but for Walnut that maybe a good deal since fewer places have it. But if you are satisfied with shorts like this you may want to look around your area for local hardwood mills. Any mill that makes finished lumber is going to have cut offs and shorts, because the customers expect a certain quality and length. If you ask politly some places will let you get these pieces for FREE, because they usually just burn them. Which is a waste, I know, but with high volume there is always waste. Just ask them if you can get some of their cut offs or scraps.

I work at a hardwoods mill and know that we burn shorts like that of red oak, maple and poplar a lot. I try to save some of the better stuff for projects, but I'm getting overrun with wood and no time to use it. I'm new to the whole woodworking thing and haven't bought a stick of wood yet. So far I've got a 80% complete workbench all Hard White Maple, a completed out feed table and the beginings of a chessboard. And about 100 or more BF of red oak and maple, plus a stack of mahogany shorts stuffed in the back of my 1 ton Van. plus the bundles of molding shorts 4'-5' stuffed in my storage unit.

Just my 2 cents. ( and since I grew up in Canada the excahange rate makes that about 1.7 cents Ah. )

Hey Moldnmaker! If you have wood to burn I'm sure you could sell it to the rest of us! There are no mills in my part of Texas, heck there aren't even any trees! I'll be happy to help you out with that wood you are being overrun with. Seriously if you can get it, I'm interested in buying it!

              Thanks,
              Doug

a guy in my woodworkers club (haven seen him in a year) is part of a HUGE african hardwood importer, he's been selling us their "shorts" for $1.00-$1.50 bd/ft , mostly the af.mahagony but also some other types.
what they call a short is not what i do, it's anything under 6',but theres even 8' pieces with surface cracks and so its a 'reject' .
i should plane a few pieces and post som pics, its gorgeous stuff!

                hey MoldnMaker, wanna trade

I think Woodfinder.com has a list of woods and characteristics. here ya go http://www.woodfinder.com/woods/woodindex.php It's not as good as some of the books and other site, but it will get ya started. also try www.woodworkerssource.net they list the characteristics of the woods they sell.

Wood mills in the ATL are nice enough, but have dels (or say they do) and they sell there shorts for WAY to much. Now if you are offering a deal, I can be at your house in 4 hours or so.

I am always looking for new wood to screw up.........

                      I'm IN!!!

Hey Moldnmaker I'm with Doug on this....I'd certainly be willing to buy some wood from ya too if you wanted to...also no trees here in Lubbock. There are some nice lumber yards but no mills anywhere near so wood is priced really high. I paid 2.75/bf for oak and soft maple and 5.95 for cherry. The oak and maple are S2S to 25/32 but the cherry is roughsawn to about a full inch. If I could get walnut for 2.25/bf I'd max out a credit card..lol.
The truth is just the truth.

Boy, wait til the folks at PETW read that...

Here in California we are not allowed to burn wood because that would be cruel to the wood, and it would irreversibly destroy the environment.

Nor are we allowed to "purchase" or "own" wood, as that would be demeaning to the wood. Instead, those who are qualified after rigorous interviews and shop inspections get to adopt the wood and become wood guardians.

Not a bad deal I guess.
Maybe the shipping is what makes it good?
I just saw in my local merchandiser an add selling 3/4 & 4/4 surfaced; walnut, oak and maple boards for $2 BF Kiln dried.
Doesn't say lengths so that would make me think they are normal lenghts.
I was at an auction last year where I got 10' 4/4 ASH boards for $1.75 a board (not BF) oh yeah they were anywhere from 8"-14" wide
There was so much lumber everyone trucks were full and they wern't buying any more.
I am still kicking myself for not filling up my garrage.
there was a ton of chery, oak , walnut, ash ....
It was a once in a life time thing that I am sure I will never see again.
                          Sigh..

OK, after popular demand. I think I can get some wood for you guys, but it will be in limited quantitys. What is the minimum length you guys can use ? What is a usable quantity ? and what type of wood? (red oak, soft maple, hard maple or poplar, we only get very small quantitys of other woods so I'm just sticking with those 4 types)

I can usually get pieces up to 4', but most will be shorter. Since I peaked some interest I'll just tell you what I got to offer. Wood I can get is: S4S of varied widths from 1x2's to 1x10's. Most will need to be ripped down to a slightly smaller size, since the main reason it gets cut off is because it is not full size. For instance say we are running 1x8's if the edge is messed up we cut it, its still a perfectly good piece of wood you just need to rip it down to a 1x7 or 1x6. Another reason for cut backs is knots and natural dark stains( stain only applies to Hard White Maple). I have some other odds and ends stuff thats not 1 by stock. Including some edge banding cut backs from 12" to 29" long that work perfect for making chess and checker boards they are 1 5/8" x 9/16" I got those in red oak and Mahogany.

I have some on hand, that I'll part with. Post or e-mail me with above answers and I'll see what I can do. I really enjoy this forum and would really like to show my appreciation. I will practically give this stuff away at 0.25 a BF you pay actual shipping. Local pickups welcome. The odds and ends stuff, just tell me what you need/want I'll see if I got it or can get it , then we'll work out a fair price.

I hope I haven't bit of more than I can chew here.

And just a note we are currnetly running a large order of poplar, so if you are willing to take 12" - 24" pieces tell me now, so I can save them for you. Because otherwise I'm just saving 36" and longer for my own use. Be good stuff for making drawers and glued up panels. Sorry If I highjacked your thread Otter, I'll be sure to give you a discount.
