    I'm back! (New Tool Day)

OK I'm back after a long absence. (My previous username was Germdoc btw.) I was not doing a lot of woodworking for awhile except home improvement stuff. I was playing a lot of guitar, my second hobby, and traveling and working quite a bit.

I recently decided it was time to get back in the game with some serious stuff. So I finally bit the bullet and upgraded to a Sawstop contractor saw. I won't bore you with the details except to say it is extremely robust, with the iron wings and extension table and fence weighs about 400# (though moves easily with the mobile base), and was quite a project to put together and install in my basement workroom. I retired my 15-year-old BT3000 to mobile jobsite saw status, as we anticipate doing some home reno on a rental duplex in Lincoln, NE, in the next year.

I also won't bore you with the performance of the saw, except to say it is very accurate and a pleasure to use in every way. My fingers feel better already.

I made a live-edge walnut shelf recently--there were some splits, so I put in some butterfly keys to stabilize it. Worked like a charm. I am finishing with a couple of coats of Danish oil then paste wax. It will go in the breakfast room.

Anyway, glad to see some of the same names still here. Look forward to posting on new projects in the future.

Welcome back Jeff. Nice saw will finger safe. I thought about but at age it would get enough use. Winding down some hobbies so I can spend more time traveling ot Granddaughter Softball Tournament. Someone would say at my age a SawStop would be a good idea. Note to kids if you are that worried you are welcome to make dear old dad safe.

Welcome back. The new saw and shelf look nice. I wish I had the space for a saw like that.

                    Thanks guys!

Here's what it looks like after installation, and adding the potato and onion basket and my fiancee's teapot collection...

It was a lot of fun to use the new saw, although actually I only used it for one cut here. The board was so wide it was unwieldy to run through the tablesaw using the miter, so I resorted to the good ole circular saw.

Today I am making a picture frame and a frame for a vintage school map, which will hang in our basement. Nothing fancy, both made out of quality pine. My fiancee is a handy gal herself and wants to learn to use the saw. She encouraged me to get the saw. Our next big project is a huntsman table for the living room entry. It will be made out of cherry, possibly with maple drawers and accents.

Great looking saw. How is the dust collection?

It's pretty good. Reviews say it gets 90% of dust, and I'd say that's about right. There's a shroud underneath to catch dust, which helps significantly.
