Our last local lumber yard and ACE hardware closed down last year. We do have a McCoy's Building Supply which is a small chain (85 stores), locally owned business. Their prices are only a little above the box stores and in the past year or so have started to offer 10% off to retired and active military. Biggest advantage is that they only hire people that know about their products. Stock can be a bit limited but they don't gouge you on special orders like the box stores do.

I am also partial to them because I worked for them in 1974 when they only had 8 stores and got to know both Emmett McCoy and his wife Miriam, as well as their daughter and son in law (He managed the store I worked in.) Emmett passed away last year and his son now runs the business.

Our local True Value doubled in size twice over the last few years, and the local ACE went into a nicer building. I am quite happy to see that. Unfortunately many other small, medium and large businesses in the area are losing out against Amazon & Co.
