    2014-2015 LeeValley Catalogs

I placed a small order a couple of weeks ago from LeeValley and clicked to recieve their latest (2014-2015) "Tools" and also "Hardware" catalog. The Tools catalog is sell over 440 pages, much more than past catalogs. The Hardware catalog is 270 pages.

I still like catalogs that I can hold and read - much better than looking up items online and missing tons of things that I don't know about.

Got my coffee, sitting by the fireplace been looking at the eye candy this morning.

Two great catalogs. Can't wait to get the next "Garden" catalog. They outdid themselves with the latest two catalogs.

I'm big on printed catalogs. I collect most that I receive, replaced only the later version. I love to browse thru stuff just to know what's there, and sometimes get inspired in various ways (ie, not just to purchase a said item).

That said, not all catalogs are equal. Lee Valley must create some of the best catalogs I can remember, even outside the woodworking world. Their text is brief, the language engaging, the pictures are stunning, and they have judiciously split into 3 different categories, so you don't have to lift a big binder all the time.

Just this morning I had the Woodcraft catalog in my hand. They offer a ton of stuff, but all that in one single fat catalog is not inviting - the font is tiny, the text is voluminous, the pictures could be bigger, sharper and brighter, and the arrangement is strictly alphabetic, which while utilitarian, is too much like a dictionary to excite interest.

I'm lucky enough to be on the big book mailing list for Cabela's and Grizzly.

They're almost nice enough to set out on a coffee table! It might impress visitors!

          Grizzly's I get, and that's a tome!

But what's Cabela's? Maybe I should get that too...

< I know, rather pathetic to actively acquire catalogs that may not even be relevant to me and that I may never buy from; but hey - my wallet thanks me!>

Cabela is to Bass Pro like Tiffiny's is to Gordons! OK, maybe that wasn't a good analogy.

While not a slick as those mentioned above for reference I love the Grainger catalog. The #404 I have is 4,674 pages. You definitely need to prop it up.

Tool porn at it's finest, that's for sure. I am all about digital content and all the sense it makes, but I am a fool for a good printed catalog.

I ordered some band saw blades from Highland Woodworking. Fantastic products, but the catalog they send out needs some work. Very "old timey" which is a great retro look, but the text is sooo small and very little pictures.

I don't get LV catalogs. I might find myself living in a van down by the river surrounded by some really, really nice planes
