Otemon splice

I stumpled upon this (http://thecarpentryway.blogspot.co.u...dence.html?m=1) on Pinterest and followed the link to the article that talks about Japanese joinery. The joinery in question is the "Otemon splice." Frankly, my head hurts a little bit trying to figure it out. The closest info I can find on Google is this (http://www.daikudojo.org/Archive/woo.../misc_joinery/).

Does anyone know more about this joinery? It's interesting and would love to see how it is put together (preferably a video).

Very interesting and ornate. I wonder if there's any of this type of "trickery" involved, like used on benches - and Mark's mallet.

In wonder as well. According to the pic (http://www.daikudojo.org/Archive/woo...916_142637.JPG) it appears to be a trick, but rather it needs to come together in a very specific manner/angle...

Mark, I tried to find your mallet posting but couldn't find it. Even with the pic from Bill I can't imagine how you would fit that mallet together.
