You Yanks have it good in the winter time!

Well, I am not exactly in "yankee" territory in southern Missouri (Springfield area) but it is cold here. Got down into the low teens early this morning,

LOML and I decided to go to my single daughter's home in Ozark for Christmas (Near Branson for entertainment, Springfield for BassPro and Grizzly for me). My Arkansas daughter, her husband and 5 kids joined us here. This house is not really made for 10 people but we are managing.

And the refrigerator here does not hold enough food, dessert and drinks on an on-going basis for 10. So, in a brilliant move, we brought a couple of ice chests, set them outside on the side porch and put food and drink in them!

    WORKS WELL!

I typically put canned drinks in the fridge here all year long too, but lately been keeping them on the back porch. Nice and cold when you want one.

We use our enclosed porch for a cooler most of the winter--but at 2 below zero this morning, i wouldn't have opened a soft drink. The porch works as a refrigerator between about +15 and +35--any colder and it acts like a freezer!!

Pretty cold here in St. Louis, too. I've been using the garage for cold beverages. Yesterday, LOML put cookies (still on the sheets) on the roof of her car to cool. Took about a third the normal time, and kept me out of the goodies.

Just cleaned up a glass 1/2 gallon of milk that "exploded" in the garage. (It was -2 here last night). Hank's right, a $2.00 Styrofoam chest would have been brilliant
I am praying for patience but extremely upset that it takes so long.

It is 50 here right now, we finally warmed up We don't normally get real cold temp but we went a stretch earlier this month of low temp. Our main problem here is no rain and no snow in the Sierras,we are right on the edge of a Drought one of the nearby cities has already started rationing water for landscape and other outdoor water use. I am going turn the sprinkler system on tonight as it is getting pretty dry. Have a Merry Christmas all

I can remember going swimming on New Years day back in the early 60's when I was living in West Covina and going to school. Go to the Rose Parade, to cousins for dinner and swimming, couple of time even went surfing. Going home for Christmas was miserable because of the Tule Fog in the Valley after coming off the Grape Vine all the way to Sacramento. The temps with fog was a Hi of 42 and low of 40 alway looked forward to going back to LA. Now 50 years later don't care to go to LA, it was fun when I was young.

This time of year the whole outdoors is my refrigerator.
Last week I brined a turkey in a 5 gallon bucket sitting on the back porch (lidded of course)
