    Riddle me this, woodworkers:

    How does picture 1 + picture 2 = picture 3?

Picture 1 is easy and quite frankly out of necessity.... hint enough

Picture 2 - not so easy a clue

Picture 3 - is the end result after 2 and may help figure out 2.

And yes, that is a large garbage can nearly full to the top. Never thought a trash can could smell so good ;-)

Kick back or ramp up, it will all be sawdust in the end!

        Seriously, no idea.
If you can read this you assembled wrong.

          Fair enough.

Each picture is meant to have you think of a particular woodworking procedure. The splitter is a necessity for what operation?
After that operation it is very common to do what?
Inspect picture three, what do you see?

On the right track, but wrong operation. Kerf would be sawdust, look carefully at pic 3.

Well, pic #3 could be what was scraped by the riving knife from contact.

I'm just not understanding how you are planing with a table saw blade or what the ramp is for and for goodness sake, someone put the sticker on the wrong side of your throat plate.

Lee is thinking about the processes! Gj! No, t.s. was just for ripping. The ramp was an integral part in creating those wood shavings, it was my 30 sec planer outfeed "support"
The top that was made was posted in shop updates.
                      Thanks for playing! :-)

I don't agree. While the two devices (riving knife, splitters) are intended to keep the kerf, wood can "walk" as it's being cut. Wood can, push against the fence towards the blade. In a case like that it's edge can be forced into the riving knife or splitter, and cause binding. What happens then...since it's at the rear of the blade, can be projected up and forward towards the operator.

This is the same complaint I have with the "short fence", that is used in Europe. Makers there decided that once the stock clears the back of the blade, it needs no fence, and hence, lessens the possibility of kickback. BULLPUCKY. As wood gets cut, it can drift either way. So, for example, if ripping a long piece of lumber, with no fence past the blade, you have "legs" as a result of the cut that can go anywhere. Just my opinion from experience.

                          .

Agreed, however in this case I started ripping 2x12's on the darksider, now mind you the t.s is not ready for full duty! No splitter, riving knife or blade guard. The bt in my opinion wasn't up to ripping 2 of these boards multiple times so I rigged up one of the throat plates that came with the saw. (yes the previous owner had really messed them up, had raised the blade into the underside while it was inserted in the wrong direction...)

When I started the rip, the board closed up and stopped the blade... not wanting to lose the day, I drilled a mortise into the throat plate and jammed in a piece of hardboard and went back to work. Not perfect, but it did the job.
What's that we say down here? Git-r-done, lol
