Been a while, came back for some wisdom, need help with project

    Hi

It's been a while, hope the community is doing okay

I'm building a small project, and I need to guidance and advice/help

I need to join 2 pieces of plywood so that they close together like a clamshell hinge

I'm building an all in one pc and I need to figure out a way to attach the base to the body in such a way as to allow me to adjust the angle that the monitor sits on the desktop ( the guts of the computer are all mounted on the back of the monitor, and all told weigh less than 10 lbs ( monitor and guts included)

I thought about using a leaf hinge with the pin removed, and a threaded rod inserted through the center, with some lock washers and locknuts on the end to provide some tension on the hinge joint, but all I see that I am doing is pinching the edges of the hinge on the washers, and over time ( very short time) either the hinge will wear, or the washers will wear, and I'll get a loose connection.

any thought ( or does anyone know what that type of hinge is actually called?)

How about this adjustable support from Rockler?

You might think I haven't contributed much to the world, but a large number
of the warning labels on tools can be traced back to things I've done...

      Thanks for that link.

I don't know if that would work, I am looking for something more along these lines:

this is a hinge that I salvaged from a buddy's custom PC build where we disassembled his monitor stand. I am currently using it to let me keep my treadmill keyboard relatively level so I can answer emails when I'm on the human hamster wheel.

I would like to find something like this, or else I could just use this, and find a different way of attaching the keyboard ( which I need to swing out of the way to control the treadmill)

I think I may have found what I am looking for, something called a friction hinge

      or

      http://www.amazon.com/Tochigiya-TH-1...friction+hinge

now the next question, how to calculate how much torque I need in order to keep this thing from just falling over

the height of the front body of the PC is 12" the total weight should not exceed 11 pounds ( video card, mother board, liquid cooling, control panel LCD panel, and the 3/4" Birch and 1/4" birch this thing is made of should weigh no more than that)

The birch has a nice Kona stain finish (minwax/lowes) with a gloss poly finish. The LCD is recessed into the 3/4" birch ( thanks to my ryobi router and patern cutting bit) all the guts of the PC will be mounted to the 1/4" birch, which is bolted to the back of the monitor board. I'll take some pics if anyone wants to see it. This is a completely open all in one gaming rig using a recycled Laptop LCD as the display, and a controller board for the LCD from a nice chinese company. I can provide links if anyone is interested in recycling some of your old laptop gear.
