Whoa, cool! What have you got in mind to carve out?

We just got a Makerbot at work and it's been fun building things in Sketchup and printing them out.

Better make the spouse something first, if she approved this.

Any good sites or books to learn about programming these?

Tom, If you don't already know about this site, try http://www.cnczone.com/forums/ A lot of good info, both machine-specific and general help.

                      Sorta like here.

The software is fairly intuitive. The machine runs on Mach 3 which runs G code files and is the basic control panel for the machine. The CAM software I bought is a program Called Visual Mill which takes the standard format IGES or STEP files and allows you to plan the routing operations including which bits to use for which operations. This program is very user freindly and comes with a tutorial that walks you through the basic proceedures. It also comes with a CAD package called Visual CAD. I use Autocad Inventor but I think for most basic operations you could get away with the Visual CAD. This all sounds a lot more complicated than it actually is. Once you spend some time with the software it gets clearer.
