The person who broke into our home was a dimwit

We returned from a month long vacation yesterday, to find the back door open and the house ransacked. Upon scrutiny we found that the thief had decamped with (a) the dish satellite/DVR box (b) lots of artificial jewellery in the small armouire in the bedroom. What a dummy!

What s/he did not take (but could have) : (a) my DSLRs and lenses, worth about $3000 (b) Blu-ray player sitting right above the DVR box worth $200 (c) Canon HD Camcorder and P&S camera worth $1000 (d) a Nook (e) older iPhone.
(I am not even counting the 42" LCD TV or the desktop computer and the couple of LCD monitors because they'd be too conspicuous)

Not that they did not search, or did not have time : contents of every shelf in every room had been been pulled down, every small box had been emptied. The camera(s) were lying around on the floor, and the webcam was pulled out but not taken (so he knew about possible monitoring?).

I had a small fire-proof 'safe' to keep my documents - he ripped open its locking mechanism (yes, it was plastic - ) and strewed the papers around. He took the time to dismantle the lock on the door leading to the garage, and to add insult to injury he used my own screwdrivers to do that!

I've not inventoried the garage closely, but he's not taken the Unisaw or the bandsaw, and he may not have known the value of a LeeValley plane...

The cops came over to have a look, and pointed out that he had entered thru the window in the kitchen by prying open it open somehow, and exited via the back. Now my wife is so spooked that I'll have to re-subscribe to ADT; me, I'm just happy he did not take anything I'd need to pay to replace; Dish sent somebody today to replace the box for free.

I'm fairly certain it has to be somebody within the community; it's gated, and methinks it has to be somebody who had cased the house earlier to ensure it was vacant.

Does the dish dvr connect to a phone line for updates (channel guides, etc)?
I wonder if it has traceable IP address, that would show up with the phone number called from?
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

It's a real mess...by the time they leave. It's a form of rape if you ask me. You're fortunate that your loss was minimal, and there wasn't serious damage to the property.

I've had two break-ins at my home (when I was single). The first time they forced open an awning window (they're easy). They took easy stuff to take, but knew what to take. Not many things but favorite things. This was some time ago...a VCR, 3 weapons...a SW .357, an XM177E2(CAR-15), and a KG9, a Rolex watch, and a gold Dunhill lighter.

The second break in they took some leather jackets, 2 TV's and a sound system comprised of Marantz tuner, amp, Dual 1019 turntable, a Teac A4000 tape deck, and two large floor speakers. When they came in the first thing they did was go to a sock drawer to get some hand protection.

Both times I figured it had to be someone in the neighborhood, or an ex-employee, as my routine was regular about going to the shop early...being gone all day...and arriving home late.

That really sucks when you come home to something like that. One night, some one broke into a number of cars in the neighbourhood-mine included. Although they only stole some change and a bunch of tapes, I was still PO'ed and have never left anything in a car overnight again.

That's bad radhak- hate to hear it.
Someone broke into my dental office by (according to a detective) putting a gear puller on an outside knob and hitting it with a hammer to break the axle. They took expensive camera equipment and (get this) all my extraction forceps. I was told that it was probably a devil worshipping group who would use the forceps in animal sacrifice. Scary to think that my equipment is helping the devil. But I guess the devil is at work anytime anyone has a breakin.

Sorry to hear that bro, ADT or not if they do the smash and grab the cops will come long after the intruders are gone. Better to beef up your entries and exits and egress windows making it harder for them to get in. I am glad they didn't get any of your tools but sad that they misused your screwdriver... I hate it when people use them for prying!

If they also snatched an autoclave, that would make you wonder.

If they had gotten my autoclave also, I would have suspected the new guy down the road OR someone who really likes steamed hot dogs.
