moving...its finally happening

i've been missing in action here for sometime. work has kept me too busy to do anything else. i have not even had a chance to mess around with the bike either.

so, it finally happening....i had been dreading that i would have to move one day since my lay off.

i got an offer from a company in Sacramento, CA and i have decided to take them up on it. we are now moving to CA! i am going to start working on the 9th of July and then will look to move the family/house/my ww shop some time in august. we are looking to rent for a year before i plan on buying a house...but i need a one car garage to hold all my tools and machinery at minimum.

they are going to pay for the move, but i've got be there for two years min, otherwise i'd have to pay it back. if it was just the household items, i would have moved myself, but with the huge table and tools, i'm going to hire a moving company.....i've got some quotes, and now just have to choose one of them.

any one here from that neck of the woods? we are looking to move to davis or elk grove....any ideas or suggestions or any thoughts on a better area around sacramento to move would be appreciated.

I've been in Sacramento nearly 25 years and was recently in a similar situation where I thought I was going to have to move out of this area. While there are certainly wonderful parts of the country, I would have really missed this area (even with all the California quirkiness).

Depending on where your offices will be located, you might also consider looking in the Roseville/Rocklin/Lincoln (northeast of Sacramento) or Folsom/Granite Bay (east of Sac).

Welcome to Sacrament and quirky California. There are many good things to see and do in the area, the pro basketball team is not one of them. We have a great AAA minor league team and beautiful ball park. Your 2 hours from the beach or high Sierras. Get Hot in the summer but not to cold in the winter. Snow is now problem here rain about 17"-20" is normal between Nov to April. Depending on your political views you will either love or hate it. Give me a shout when you get time and I will be happy to show you around.

Rob and Tom are being creative and rather polite when they refer to California as "quirky". I'm stuck here for the duration and my feeling about the place can't be dhown on a family-oriented web site. Insane doesn't begin to do the place justice.

On the other hand, I'm looking at Lake Tahoe and the surrounding mountains through my office window and the trees in our back yard right now. It's a bit over two hours from Sacramento and at the moment, the summer crowds aren't too bad. The high temperature is supposed to be around 70, but at the moment it's 51 degrees outside.

I didn't want to get banned. I was born here and wish I could be some place else. But at 70 I don't feel like starting over again. I have a 300K house worth 130K. Now I live in a slum full of sec 8 housing and absentee landlords. Can't even sleep with a window open any more, the police helicopter wake me up.

thanks Hank! i've actually missed being here. my job prior to being layed off was more 7 to 4, which gave me a ton of time to do other things....but the job that i got afterwards to help pay the bills was litterally an all day job, so i would be exhausted and didnt have much energy to do anything. the new job will most likely be time consuming too, but i will be learning a ton of new things hopefully to help me grow professionally. i am looking forward to a change.

my work is going to be in west sac. the company is clark pacific. they are located on the west bank of the river. we've got 2 children, daughter who is 13 and going to grade 8 and a son who is 9 and he is going into grade 4. i need to find a place that has good school, especially really good high schools as it will help her do better so is prepared for university.

i had heard that elk grove (west side) was good. i dont want to commute to work for more than 20-25 minutes max (either to or back from work). i was looking at the traffic patterns on google maps, and it seems like there is a lot of yellow and red coming from the east from either roseville or folsom...i have to work from 8 to 5....i cant stay any longer than 5 so i will be most likely going in earlier to work to get work done, so my return commute time is really important. my std commute time has been over 50 min, i'd like to change that now since i have that opportunity.

Hearing that your employer is in West Sac, you might consider the West Sac areas of Southport/Bridgeway Island/Bridgeway Lakes. These areas would be 5-10 minutes south of the Clark Pacific office, and likely counter-commute to any job sites in the outlying areas. I worked in Roseville for years, and had a 25-30 minute commute, whereas those coming from Roseville might have 45-60 minute commutes due to the traffic flows.

The Washington Unified school district has had its challenges, and has made some changes due to budget concerns. Elementary schools are now K-8, with limited busing. Bridgeway Island elementary is the district's top-rated school based on State testing results and is one of the newer facilities. The high school is River City, and is new within the past 3 years.

If schooling is of the highest importance, then I would probably suggest Davis or Roseville. Davis might float to the top due to the easier commute, if the majority of your employment time will be in West Sac (or Bay Area) as opposed to outlying job sites to the North/East/South of Sacramento. Rental market, tho, might be more advantageous in Roseville, as the Davis market is affected by the UCDavis student population.

But, don't discount West Sac if you need a balance between work, family, and schools.

Many of the schools in fact all of them are financially strapped and the programs are suffering and will probably get worse in November if the voters vote down the tax hike. Elk Grove has a good School district with some good schools depending on where you live. This mainly due the a non English speaking immigrant population My Granddaughter lives in the district but dose not go to school near her home because of these issues. She will be in 3rd grade and go to a school 5 miles away where she lived before her parent bought a home. They have year around school in some schools modified year around and conventional year schools depending where you live. West Sac has some nice homes and is an up and coming community the home prices are a little cheaper over there. You have to be careful where you buy because of the rivers and the requirement to purchase flood insurance. If you like to fish you are coming to the right place. Look up Sacramento River Cats, the great minor league team we have here. The Kings are a joke thanks to their owners so for get that and will probably be moving in a year or so. Lot of history out here not as old as back east but still a lot of place go and see. The are plenty of nice houses going through foreclosure and you can get a good deal on and these are in nice areas.

One other thing to be aware of. You will be coming here in summer. It can does hit 110F the big difference here is no humidity. In the winter we can and do get Tule Fog or Valley Fog where the temp is a low of 39 and a high of 42 and foggy all day for some 60 days or until we get a storm. If you want warm and sun go to the bay area or up above 1200ft. Other than that the weather in boring unless you watch the local weather forecasters they overload you with info and can make you think Katrina is on the way. Been here all my life only 1 major flood, felt a few earth quakes none centered in Sacramento. If you like to ski you will love most winters here the ski resort are 2hrs or less from here. There is an arts scene here with local playhouses, touring Broadway shoes and Major art gallery, A good orchestra. San Francisco is 90 minuets away with UC Berkley, Stanford and the Museums and Theater. Sacrament is just centered midway between the Ocean and the Mountains.
