Hand planing, up close and personal

A researcher investigating the effects of the cap iron on hand planing prepared a video, which has now been subtitled in English. A poster on another forum (woodnet) is hosting the video. I found it fascinating, thought others might enjoy it, too.

Does the subtitling seem accurate? Seemed reasonable to me, but I don't speak Japanese.

It was close enough. Their terms were too technical but I did understand some of it. The interpreter did a good job of putting it in laymans terms.

Your title was right on. For me, knowing that it was done in Japanese, I knew that it would be quite technical. That is the way the do things!

Although interesting, I did fall asleep watching it... don't know if I was tired or not, but synopsis was that the cap iron needs to be adjusted in distance somewhat proportionally to the depth of the cut taken. There seemed to be a sweet spot as well.

Did anyone else notice that on the close up, it almost seemed as if the cap iron's face had a concavity in it almost encouraging the waste wood to curl up and out of the way?
I think in straight lines, but dream in curves

Fascinating! Not sure my eyes will do 0.1 and 0.2 mm though to set the plane up...
