I got some tips...
Your friend is correct – one week is not enough. If he is going to jettison the beach, he actually may miss out on more wildlife than he will see in Monteverde or Arenal. I think both of those places are worth a visit but the sheer number of people trekking through that area reduce the total number of wildlife that is visible (No monkeys but lots of frogs and lizards, though). He may see some sloths and, if really lucky, a quetzal. Although the only quetzal I saw in Monteverde was gray through binoculars in the mist. I had much better luck with exotic birds in the San Gerardo de Dota to San Isidro de El General areas (I stayed at Albergue de Montana Savegre). He might want to consider checking out the Parque International La Amistad. Since I was there last a new highway has been completed from San Jose to the Quepos area on the Pacific coast. Other areas/national parks to consider are Parque National Chirripo and Parque National Corcovado, especially if he is interested in wildlife.
