    Thank you!

Many, many thanks to all who serve and paid the price. It may not be my place to say so, since I never served in the military, but I am VERY grateful for your service.

It doesn't matter if you were in the service or not! I am sure that I am not alone in thanking you for your appreciation.

Although Memorial Day is technically a day to recognize those soldiers who have paid the ultimate price in defense of their county, any day is a good day to thank those who have served or are serving this country.

Memorial Day is the day set aside to recognize those that gave their lives while in service. Some of us spend more than one day a year mourning those losses. Their families and loved ones likely spend every day doing that.

Every time I see a Discovery, History or Military Channels show pertaining to military history or training they run run through my mind. And, if they are interviewing old soldiers and if they choke up, so do I. I wonder what sights and sound have haunted them all through their lives. I often think of my namesake and get out the pics that he sent home and wrote on the back, "Here's me and my gear, Mom", or "Here's me with some of the guys". I have copies of his telegram notifying the family of his death, his c/o's letter, letter of interrment and of disinterrment/ reinterrment as well as a picture of his grave in the manicured cemetary in Holland. Anyhow, I hope that I have honored his name by how I carried it. He too was called, Chiz. God bless you Uncle Chiz and all of your compatriates.
          Blessings,
          Chiz

            Chiz,

First of all, let me offer my condolences to you and yours. I really tear up when a brother doesn't return home. And there's been way too many of them.

            Second,
I highly doubt you or anybody in their right mind would want to experience any of the things I saw (include Cab in this too) and did. They are the stuff nightmares are made of. When this time of the year rolls around, I can't help but to wish I could turn off the ghosts and the evil.

It's not a good time for me and anyone who has been put in harms way and lives to re-live it again and again.

            Sometimes it really sucks.

            Bruce

My family has a long and wide record of military service, although until quite recently I was unaware of any casualties.

I've been doing a lot of research on ancestry.com. It turns out my great-great-grandfather, Cornelius Haley, died in a POW camp during the Civil War. He left behind a young wife and two small boys.
