    Memorial day

I guess I don't have to remind you about observing Memorial Day (it's not about the sales).

Again, I ask that you take some time out, hopefully more than 30 seconds, to think about all the men and women no longer here with us.

Were thay heros, some probably, but the majority had a job to do for the rest of us and that's just what they did. Without questions or whining, they went where they were needed and unfortunately a lot of those solid citizens never returned.

No one asked "What's in it for me" or "Gee, this will impress the rest of the guys/girls on the block". They did it for you and the rest of Americans.

So stop for a while and thank every last one of them fthat was put in harms way so you can live a freer life.

I constantly think of the guys I was with and couldn't bring home with me.

And to all you Marines, Semper Fi, for an job outstanding, although I never was a "Jar Head" I respect the **** out of every last one of you

    Bruce

Again, unfortunately, my signature has been deleted out of respect of all those who have fallen.

    God Bless you all

My thoughts will be with all those that lost loved ones due to conflict, like this woman.

I agree Bruce. Many served and paid everything because they were required to do it. It is because of their sacrafice that we are able to freely quibble today!

        Cab,

Lately all your posts are making me tear up. You're getting to be the official forum's Bearer of Bad News.

Have a solemn Memorial Day. Us old survivors have to stick together, not many of us around lately.

I kind of didn't expect the military honors at my Dad's memorial service back in February but it was nice. He served in WWII about 60 years ago but he was still recognized as the veteran he was. The guys that do this do a great service to the families. They show more respect for the service men than most of us do (including me).

            Thanks Bruce for your post.

I thank all those that never made it back to their loved ones, and pray for their families. And I also give "Thank You" to those who did come back.
I do not know who said, "Freedom is not Free..." but they were correct. Thanks to all who made our Freedom happen.
As a side note, here's an article about one of our Canadian WWII vet spy.

Again, Thank You to those who made it back; And Special Thank You to those that paid the ultimate price.

              Jim,
Yup, It's really sad how quickly we Americans forget.
I personally will not patronize a store that flaunts Memorial Day sales. There is something very wrong celebrating a serious holiday by buying a new TV.

I remember hearing stories of uniformed forces returning from 'Nam and getting spit on in the airport. I am really thankful I didn't have to wear a uniform being a Contract Employee.

              Thanks for your answer

I was draft-eligible in the mid-1970s but did not get called. At the time, I'm not sure I really understood or paid attention to what was going on. However I think a fictional character named John Rambo really summed it up quite nicely when he said, "All we want is for our country to love us as much as we love it."

My dad served in WWII and I had friends who didn't come back from 'Nam. I too saw returning servicemen getting spit on and am happy to see the guys and gals returning now getting the respect they deserve.

I'm another one who won't have anything to do with sales on Monday.

People don't seem to understand that Memorial Day is not for the living but, rather a day to remeber and honor those who gave there lives in the service of our Nation.

It is the Soldier, not the minister
Who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the Soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the Soldier, not the poet
Who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer
Who has given us freedom to protest.

It is the Soldier, not the lawyer
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the Soldier, not the politician
Who has given us the right to vote.

It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,
                      Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.

                      Charles Michael Province, U.S. Army
I reject your reality and substitute my own.

As a member of AMVETS, this Memorial day, as we do every year our Post will honor our fallen veterans at our two local cemeteries. Our closing phrase on all correspondence is; "All gave some; some gave all!".

I sort of reprimanded one of my daughters friends a couple days ago. She asked how I was celebrating Memorial Day. Her answers to my query of "What is there to celebrate?" was pathetic, but not surprising. I don't think she even understood the concept, she might understand it a bit better now.

In addition to all those that have fallen I also give pause and think of all the Vets who did come back home. They too had a toll taken whether physically and/or mentally. Veterans Day and Memorial Day aren't the only times we should think about those who paid a price, or the ultimate price, for us.
