    Money and time well spent

I decided it was time to replace the T111 on the gable on one end of the house, not a big project, but with my shoulder screwed up more than I can handle until I have time to spend some quality time with the surgeon.

We were discussing getting a contractor when my son the college senior chimed in, "why don't we do it, you have a whole shop of tools". Ok, got me there, but that shoulder thing again. The wife mentioned that maybe we could get him and his best friend who is almost another son (med student and recently married) to us to do it. Calls were placed...

This morning they both show up at 0700 ready to go. Quick trip to the BORG and we're off. Except they barely know one end of a hammer from the other. I spent the morning talking them through everything, showing them how to use a circular saw, how to measure. Say measure to the soffit, then explain what a soffit was. Explain how to use a chalk line and mark your cuts and why the kerf matters, oh yeah...explain what a kerf is.

5 hours later were done and I had a ball, the kids also enjoyed themselves as they obviously never did anything remotely like this before. The job looks great. We came in and I handed them both $250. I'd rather give them the money then some stranger and they got a little education today.

Overall a good day for me, I'm feeling rather good right now. Maybe when they have their own homes they'll see doing some repairs isn't some mysterious thing only the contractor magi can do.

Sir, that was money and time well spent!

Everybody's the winner in your situation there. I'm sure your son and his friend (your other son ) learned a lot from you. It does the heart good to see how well your family works together. Thanks for sharing with us.

It still surprises me how much knowledge we take for granted. I've been volunteering at a broadcasting museum and I'm always having to back up and explain something that I thought was obvious.

A teaching moment well used. I'm always kicking myself for not paying better attention when my father was in shop or working on a project. Its a lesson they'll appreciate more and more as the years go by.

        Good on you!
