Around the coffee pot This forum is for any topic that you would normally talk about at the office "around the coffee pot". Jokes, tall tales, and true stories are welcome as long as they are clean and in good taste. I only ask that you steer away from topics on religion or politics. Go ahead and pull up a chair and pour yourself a cup of coffee and enjoy the conversation.

I sincerely question how this thread fits with the above in bold. News stories like those refrenced make me very sad, however what good comes from discussing it?

I am registered on another site (which shall remain nameless) that has an open topic in its forum similar to "Around the Coffee Pot". It became the location for some quite animated political discussions. Some of the participants became quite abusive, and, in some cases, membership was summarily terminated.

The moderators finally solved the problem by banning all political discussion on the open topic, and created another topic exclusively for politics. While some political comments appear now and then, political discussion has dropped to about 1% of what it was formerly. The heated discussions and the personal abuse have disappeared completely.

It appears that people who would normally not get involved in a political discussion would be drawn in by someone's comments, and the fun would begin. Now someone can vent in a separate area, and it can be responded to or completely ignored by those not interested.

I'm not suggesting anything like this for this site. Just passing on how another site handled the problem.
