Don't know if anyone will find this useful or not, but if you happen to be in the woods with a hatchet looking for white oak, and the forest is mixed with white and red you can tell the difference by looking at the leaves. White oaks all have rounded leaves while the red oak have sharper, pointer leaves. I thought it was a pretty cool tip!

While in college I began an experiment growing both varieties of oak. They eventually out grew the paper cup so I planted them in bigger containers and moved them to the hallway where they could get the sun all day. I came back one afternoon and what I had feared all along - they were gone. I assumed stolen but a guy said that one of the cleaning ladies took them. So, I went down to the dean of the dorm who was with someone but saw me and motioned me into his office. He said, "I guess you're looking for these". He motioned to the trees. The other guy says, "Hey, nice oaks. Did you start those from acorns"? You could have shoveled a ton of coal into that dean's mouth, it was that wide open. The cleaning lady and the dean had thought that they were marijuana plants. Man, what a hoot.
Good tip, chopnhack!
Blessings,
