    Watch your health symptoms

I'm 66 and generally in pretty good health. I still play tennis singles and feel pretty fit.

A short while ago, I had a fever that shot up to 103 for a couple of hours. Then it was gone. A couple of days later, I did some pretty physical stuff. Like changing out 50 gal hot water heater.

The next day a couple of my ribs hurt. I cursed myself for being stupid. Also, I was not feeling energetic. I kidded with my wife that I was finally getting old. Over the weekend, the rib pain got worse. On Sunday, I realized I had pneumonia and pleurisy, which I had before, when I was 22.

Sunday night, I was in bad shape. Every breath, no matter how shallow, was a knife to my ribs. I could barely move from my recliner.

First thing Monday, I called my doctor, and asked him if he could prescribe an antibiotic. He called me crazy, and told me to come right in. LOML drove me the 30 plus miles to his office. He took blood and an xray. He came in the room and said, "Don't worry, you will survive this." I thought, "SURVIVE THIS!"

He asked if my wife could take me to the emergency room, at Cedars Sinai, where he is chief of medicine. We arrived there, they were ready. They had me on oxygen, IV's, bags of antibiotics, and PAIN meds. I was in the hospital for 5 days, on lots of antibiotics.

I had my chest drained three different times. Once while in a CAT scan. They got a total of 1500 cc of fluid from my chest. The surgeon, who does the draining at Cedars, is amazing. I truly didn't feel any more than a little pressure.

My doctor told me that I didn't have walking pneumonia, I had lay down and die pneumonia.

The hospital bill alone, not counting doctors, who bill separately, was over $54,000. Luckily, I have Medicare and Blue Cross from my wife's employment.

The doc also said I will take around 90 days to recover. And, I am still dragging.

So, call the doctor. Don't be in denial.

    Steve

        Steve,

Glad to hear you're on the mend. I agree—as we get older it's important to pay attention to what our bodies are telling us!

With shoulders that creak and pop, 2 bad disks in the lower back, 3 more in the neck, and one knee that works right when it wants to, my body is telling me to find a comfy rocker and enjoy the sunset. The day I can't swing my leg over my Harley and pick it up off the kickstand, I'll think about listening!

Not one to take my own advice, but take it slow and let the body heal right.

Good thing you listened, Steve. Pneumonia can decrease your life span! It really takes a toll on your constitution. Rest up and get well.

A close call. Glad to hear you caught it soon enough and received treatment. Some of us may feel things like that won't happen, that we are indestructible, or ignore simple signs. I'm a lot like that. I ignored what I thought was an anxiety attack that turned out to be a heart attack.

I ignored some small blood droplets when urinating, that turned out to be bladder cancer. I'm doing it again with a stiff knee. I'll probably yield to LOML's nagging and go to the doctor. I guess when we start getting up to those years we call "mature", our attitudes and common sense should follow.

I hope you are feeling better. I ran across this quote...I forgot where I saw it, thought to be by Tony Campolo, and it applies to the way I always lived:
I refuse to tiptoe cautiously through life, only to arrive safely at death!
                    .

Get a lot of rest it'll take your body sometime to get back to normal. You were lucky to survive this ordeal not to mention the cost$$$ if you did not have medical insurance. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

                        Wow!!

Reminds me of my appendectomy at about 44. I never had any bad pain, just a small ache in my lower abdomen. It started bothering me a little in the afternoon and I mentioned it to my wife. She planned to go grocery shopping and I sent her on her way but we agreed it I was not better by the time she got back we would check it out. I got out the medical book and confirmed my suspicion that the pain was in the right place for my appendix. But it didn't really hurt that much. I wouldn't have even taken aspirin for it. Just a dull little ache. Much less pain than a muscle sprain. We went to the urgent care (a waste except it got us through the emergency room quicker) and then the emergency room. Then a brief wait for surgery.

My temperature did not increase until after the CAT scan when it went up a couple degrees. When they poked and proded it never hurt. I guess it's because of TV or something but I thought when your appendix needed removed it REALLY hurt and your temperature would be elevated. Anyway, they pulled it out and I was up and around in a couple days. It took months before I was capable of everything physically I did before but my job is a desk job so I was at work in a week or so.

I think God makes things hurt less when we get older. That only offsets the fact that we also hurt more often and for doing things that were never an issue when we were younger. The fact that we do not have intense pain and that we more often have a little pain can fool us into ignoring what is going on.

                        Jim

My wife had walking pneumonia when we were on vacation in Italy and England. For the first 3 days, she thought it was just jet lag, but then it became much worse, had to come back home and hospitalize her immediately.
As much pain as she was in, I can't imagine what the real deal is like!

                          REALLY give it a rest!

Wow, close call Buddy. Hope you are on the mend now; but in any case take it easy and let the old bod just catch up. I have always thought as complicated as the body is its a wonder we live as long as we do!
