    good thoughts for this forum....

Hey all, I have not been around much lately as I have not been building much and I've been busy with other endeavors. I recently have been doing quite a lot of photography, and started to read a photography forum (which shall remain nameless), and it just confirmed something for me. It's been said that this is one of the best forums online, and I can tell you that in my opinion, it's the only non-horrible forum online.

The childish behavior, chest thumping, and unnecessary abrasiveness of forums is just out of control. I can certainly see why Blizzard was considering doing real names for their stuff, to try and limit how stupid people will become about their actions. I think I've been spoiled by this forum, the disagreements that we encounter here are so minor compared to some other forums as to be insignificant. I have never read a post about "hey got my bt!" that was met with insults about the post being a waste of forum space...insanity.

It must be the humility that accompanies the threat of losing digits if you make a mistake! What's the risk associated with taking a bad picture? Glad you dropped by.

It may be the reality of losing your best friends.

I used to read photography forums but got really tired of the nitpicking gearheads. They are all really camera, lens, and disposable income forums.

        I enjoy it here also.

This is definitely the best forum I know of.

Speaking of photography check out this guy:

          http://www.clarklittlephotography.com/

He goes out with a waterproof camera and a surf board to get his images. I think they are fantastic.

A music forum I frequent is 99% cool, but there are a few rabble-rousers who occasionally go out of their way to insult other members. One guy posted an apology stating his cancer diagnosis and treatment make him cranky, but still.

I agree that personal insults have no place in a community forum. Unfortunately certain topics like politics and religion tend to degenerate and are best left to forums that specialize in that variety of discourse.

IMO puns and silly humor are always welcome, but there may be those who disagree...

There's another WW forum that I sometimes visit, but unless you're part of the "clique", your posts go mostly ignored. I even brought this up when honest opinions were asked for and ended up getting a barrage of negative responses about my comment. I did get a number of pm's from people who agreed with me though.

I get to a lot forums, and if the one you're referring to is the one I'm thinking it is, it is definitely a tough one to crack.

Don't know the "other forum" as I only go to a couple. I like here too. I originally came to determine the value of my BT3000 and to sell it. 3 years later and I haven't posted it but I visit a few days every week.

One forum I'm on about pop up campers and it has the most CLEAR policy I have seen consistently applied. It is a real community including people meeting in real life to camp together and in groups. I have seen practically no transgressions over the five years I've been there. The three G's (God, Guns and Government) are off limits PERIOD. They will give people a break, even a couple and ask what they should do upon occasion, and fortunately there is a very large group of people who will jump all over someone who transgresses and report faster than lightning beyond the moderators. This forum and the router forum I've joined are close seconds and seem community like and is why I like to come visit. I have seen the camper forum even allow discussions about the limits so there is a concensus where discussions end up about WHY people come there. I'm sure the moderators are gritting their teeth with their fingers over the delete button, but upon occasion when things come to a head they know they have to get to a certain point and the site is almost self moderating.

I suppose Slickdeals is another I visit. There is a quite a bit of "snarkiness" (a word I never knew until used in conjunction with forums), but generally under control and the deals are worth the trouble.

I still remember AOL in 1995 before forums were common (I also used to walk 3 miles to school-really). You could see the world trying to understand just what this new phoenomena was all about and what the limits were as the world still apparently had limits back then. We now appear to live in a world of insubstantial and constantly changing form and less and less substance and 15 yeas have gone by and the world has learned...there are no limits... And a generation has grown up not even knowing there was a world prior to the one where the "chip" wove itself into everything including our own self image... What is this monster we are creating?
