Registration no longer required for Windows XP??

I formatted/reloaded XP on my laptop about 6 months ago and it did not ask for the Product Key as usual.

Just finished reloading XP to a relatives PC and again, Product Key not required.

Not a big deal but didn't see anything ever mentioned about it.

Are you using OEM versions provided by the manufacturer? For instance using an OEM HP XP disc on a HP PC will not require Keys or activation. But if you use the same disc on a dell machine it will.

That's it. In both cases, I was using the OEM CD. In the case where the key was required, it was when I was using the XP upgrade.
