Walt Disney Was A Genius

it's a business made successful by it's (formerly) impeccably high standards, yet I have been asked (read ordered, directed, threatened) so many times in recent years to cut corners that should never be cut, to the exclusion of all else, to cheapen the costs involved.

That sucks.

Disney, perhaps more than any other iconic American corporation, needs a visionary at the helm. Not number crunchers.

Agreed. There is an area of the Magic Kingdom (I think) that has a small roller coaster and other attractions for the younger kids. They have this Pluto house that is all weird angles and stuff. Nothing is plum or square. But all the joints are perfect. Very impressive.

It's called Mickey's Toon Town. The irrigation design for that area is genuine Uncle Cracker...

We went to Disney in 2000 for a week and in 2002 we spent 5 days at Universal. The kids overwhemingly enjoyed Universal more. I think Disney's sprawl and some of it's dated atrractions in the Magic Kingdom had the most to do with that. We spent most of our time at Epcot and Hollywood studios. Dont get me wrong we enjoyed our visit very much, but the kids liked the Nickelodean and other Universal attractions much more. I think they had been more exposed to what Universal offered.
I personally enjoyed Epcot and the people who worked there very much.The fire/firework show at the lake in the center of Epcot was really unbelievable.

I have been to Disney World in 98, 2000, 2007 and 2009. I am an unabashed Disney nut. As mentioned, the quality and attention to detail is unmatched. Yes, you pay to much, but I guess it's sort of my drug.

Speaking of cleanliness, the story I heard was that while planning Disneyland, Walt bought a hot dog and started walking. When he was done with the hot dog, he stopped walking. He needed a place to throw out the wrapper and he knew that's how far the trash cans should be spread out.

Watching the documentaries (er...infomercials on the Travel Channel) on Disney are fascinating. Walt was a true visionary, and the old time Imagineers speak reverently of him.
