    Drywall Is Cheap!!!

Not too many years ago I paid 9+ bucks a sheet for 4x8 1/2" thick. Looking online I see HD sells 4x12 for 8 bucks a sheet!

Menards, have to love their American made Ply and Drywall. I paid around $5 for 5/8 fire when it was on sale last year.

From what I unserstand from our gypsum reps is that most all 5/8 sheetrock made now is Type-X.

              Fire rated makes sense.

I think they found that most applications of 5/8 was in fire rated assemblies so most of the manufacturers stopped producing their non-rated 5/8 for walls. Looking at USG and National Gypsum, their regular gypsum panels only goes up to 1/2" thicknesses.

Many years ago I wrote the specifications for a job on which the project architect (my then-boss) wanted to use 5/8" gypsum board to get a less-wavy surface than 1/2" would have yielded. The application did not require a fire rating, so he told me to spec the regular, non-rated board (which at that time was still being made in 5/8") in order to save the owner a few bucks. Turned out it cost MORE, owing to it being a special-order item.

Nine bucks? I remember when 1/2 4X8 was $2.50 a sheet, and it doesn't seem that long ago.
