Tiny But Ferocious

Yesterday we met with a guy and his wife who are longtime friends and are owner drivers OTR. They came through our area and we met for breakfast. They added to their "ride along companion" of a Cocker Spaniel, a Yorkie, 3 months old.

That thing is so cute, but a little terror. They named him "Pogo", I guess because of how he jumps around off of all fours. LOML wants one now. I'm thinking we would have a real zoo. We already have two large German Shepherds, and 3 cats (with their claws). The little guy might not have a chance.

He would be real easy to step on. He's about half the size of my shoe.

Make no mistakes about it. Cockers often look small and cute but beneath the innocent exterior often lies mean, moody, hard to predict and dangerous beast. My in-laws rescued a 3-year old cocker from a shelter. They quickly learned - they were not the first ones who bought into the cute looks. This cocker was in and out of the shelter few times before them. Everybody before them were quick to return the little guy back to the shelter once he showed his true nature. My in-laws are very stubborn (oops, persistent) and they did manage to keep him despite the nasty character. He finally settled with them but the price was very high. Both his owners, my wife, few neigbors can show bite marks from him. Numerous training classes produced very little result. I have a german shepheard based mix and I do not want to see this cocker in my house because he pesters my dog. If you want a cocker - make sure to understand that you are taking in a serious dog, take a puppy and treat him like you would treat a Rottweiler, with proper training and respect.

It wasn't the Cocker...it was their new dog...a Yorkie.

My in-laws had a four dogs at one time that ranged from a boarder collie mix down to a shitzu cross. Then I would show up with my king shepherd. The two dogs that were best pals were my shepherd and the shitzu! The shitzu knew that is she PO'ed the other dogs, the biggest dog( mine) would always protect her......and she did!

Yorkies can be an attitude problem similar to chihuahuas. There are two Yorkies in my neighborhood... One of them pisses itself if you even look at it, and the other one will bite anybody it encounters who is not a family member, and I don't mean just a nip, but a full-on feeding frenzy. I have threatened more than once to feed that little monster to my snake...

The larger of our two Shepherds has singled out one of our cats. It must be a parental instinct. The cat gets carried around the house by her head until we catch the act. The dog is constantly following the cat. I doubt that the cat is in any danger, but if she is, it will be a swift kill.

In response to the Cockers, my wife and I rescued one from Franklin,Tenn about 5 yrs ago, He was and is a very independent animal, but shortly after we got him we left him out in the backyard(fenced) while we went out to party on new yrs eve with some friends, We had only had him about 2 mo,s and had been warned that he didn,t like to be fondled or rubbed under his neck (Don,t know why) anyways when we got back let him in and wife proceeds to the bedroom with dog in tow tail wagging then I hear a blood curdling scream and out comes wife with lower lip hanging wide open bleeding all over the place, dog had bitten her in the lip as she was makin all cutsie with him and grabbed him around the neck area, Needless to say 10 stitches later and $700 less in the pocket I had thought of having him put down as we were the 3rd owners, but we kept him and he has never growled or bitten anyone else and is my companion and fishin buddy, We just got back from Lake Allatoona today after fishin and watchin him chase ducks for an hour. Pets are strange you never know what you,ll get, Here,s a pic of this ole lip biter now, We wouldn,t trade him for anything.
