I've been pretty lucky with luggage considering how many airplane trips I've taken over the years. Only had bags "misplaced" twice, I think.

However I did lose a bag at JFK when it got caught in the machinery and was badly mangled. Delta replaced it on the spot, but the replacement was not as good as the original.

For short trips, I fly Ellis Air as often as I can. No misplaced bags, but I have to do a lot more of the work myself

That's funny. LOML went to Italy last summer and bought new luggage and new clothes. Flew from Miami to New York, and from there to Spain, and then to Italy. When she arrived, no bags other than her carry on. They could have been in a few places. Three days later her bags showed up. Not a fun way to start a trip.
