NASCAR and safety glasses

Given how big NASCAR is on safety, how come folks in the garage area almost never seem to wear safety glasses?

Like today a bunch were hammering on that car to get it back out on the track. Hammers swinging, metal flying, people working under the car. And nobody was wearing safety glasses!

So how come?

That's a good question. I don't know about NASCAR, but some venues like SCCA, there are pit rules...whether they are enforced or penalties applied I couldn't say. I haven't been aware of any. A lot of SCCA events your garage is in a field somewhere. On pit road, teams do wear helmets that have polycarbonate shields.

They are focused on fixing the car fast, sometimes safety gets overlooked. I have also seen those guys weld without a helmet or glasses, which is just stupid.

Most of those teams are sponsored by a safety equipment company, so it is surprising that they don't use the equipment.

If I was out there I would wear glasses. I really hate getting stuff in my eye.

Not a big fan of government being involved in everything, but I'm surprised this does not violate some sort of OSHA regulation (esp the welding, etc.)
