    Computers -- Arrrrrrrrgh!

Our computer was running slow, and freezing up frequently. So I decided to re-install Windows XP yesterday. When I put the disk in the drive, I received the message that I could not upgrade from XP Professional to XP Home Edition. I clicked OK, then had the option to enter the Product Number. I entered it, then received the message it was invalid.

Now I'm on the phone with Dell Support. After being transferred four times, I finally got the right department (Optiplex). I was asked for the Express Service Code and the Service Tag numbers. I gave it to them. Then I was asked to verify my name, which I did. I was told my computer did not match the owner's name they had. In fact, according to Dell, it wasn't even in my state! I was told they could not help me. I explained that I had two Dell computers in my home now, but if nobody would help me, I would never buy another Dell.

Now I'm at the transfer form on the site. After a struggle, and being on the phone with them, he finally was able to get the ownership transferred to me. The only problem is the transfer did not show up on their computer, and he couldn't help me unless it showed it was registered to me. And customer service would not be open until Monday (today).

After my venting for a short while, the computer finally showed up as registered to me. Now he could help me.

Without going into the rest of the story, I was on the phone with Dell Support for over four hours!! And that doesn't take in the time it took to install XP.

I guess in the end, it came out OK because I'm now online.

Said it before and I will say it again. Backups backups backups. The 30ish bucks for a drive image program like Ghost to image your drive saves a ton of frustration.

Did you ever figure out why it ran slow, or what the problem was?

I'm guessing malware. But the freezeups?

When asked for the service tag etc online for various reasons, it always said that # was unknown. Fortunately, there was always a way around it when I used it, but I think that tells us they're not real good at record keeping at Dell.

              My sympathies.

This is exactly why I have never (at home) used a "store bought" system. The makers do weird stuff to save money, cut corners, etc. and then don't provide decent support. Fortunately, here in Sillycon Valley we have Fry's Electronics where you can get everything you need to "roll your own" system, although it may take a few trips to get everything sorted out.

What used to really tick me off (when I was an IT manager) was the makers constantly changing their models. We'd get our staff dialed in on supporting one and then it would be gone. I can see why Dell has problems but they are of it's own making.

                I cannot agree more!

Last week, I ran some experimental email software and wham, my secure email was gone. Period. No problem, clear the experimental software, and pull in the backup from the day before and ALL "secure" email restored. This was personnel and business email with lots of confidential files going back 6 years. Normal email was not effected.

Back up and back up frequently. For me - that is daily! Mine does it behind the scenes.

I believe in having a second (can be older) machine for internet research (problems), and I also keep a bootable linux distro around for problems.
Also, I have found a lot of issues with people with kids, letting the kids use the one computer (all log in under the same name/rights).
