Our computer was running slow, and freezing up frequently. So I decided to re-install Windows XP yesterday. When I put the disk in the drive, I received the message that I could not upgrade from XP Professional to XP Home Edition.
I clicked OK, then had the option to enter the Product Number. I entered it, then received the message it was invalid.
Now I'm on the phone with Dell Support. After being transferred four times, I finally got the right department (Optiplex). I was asked for the Express Service Code and the Service Tag numbers. I gave it to them. Then I was asked to verify my name, which I did. I was told my computer did not match the owner's name they had. In fact, according to Dell, it wasn't even in my state! I was told they could not help me. I explained that I had two Dell computers in my home now, but if nobody would help me, I would never buy another Dell.
Now I'm at the transfer form on the site. After a struggle, and being on the phone with them, he finally was able to get the ownership transferred to me.
The only problem is the transfer did not show up on their computer, and he couldn't help me unless it showed it was registered to me. And customer service would not be open until Monday (today).
After my venting for a short while, the computer finally showed up as registered to me. Now he could help me.
Without going into the rest of the story, I was on the phone with Dell Support for over four hours!! And that doesn't take in the time it took to install XP.
I guess in the end, it came out OK because I'm now online.
