    Limewire?

I was talking to my brother today about music. He says he gets all his from Limewire. I had never heard of it, and free music sounded fishy. I did a little (very little) research on it today.

What is the difference between Limewire and Napster (it's original iteration), Kazaa, et al?

I know peer to peer is not inherently illeagal, but sharing copyrighted material is. Maybe I just don't understand it.

Limewire has been around for a while. They are all P2P file sharing software. Whether someone uses them legally or not is up to each user. I think the biggest use of them is illlegally sharing copyrighted material.

Being p2p, isn't there an inherent danger of getting nasties like viruses?
You don't need a parachute to skydive, you only need a parachute to skydive twice.

One of my friends actually got sued for using this. He had to shell out a check for 7K. His father is an attorney and he said it wasnt worth it fighting it.

I think the difference is that if you loan someone your book, you no longer have it at your disposal until it is returned. Digital files can be copied, and shared with thousands of people. And you still have the original MP3 or whatever it is.

If the RIAA catches anyone sharing copyrighted music over any peer to peer network they can & have sued common people of thousands of dollars. They do not have pity on anyone. Just one song and it can run into the thousands. Tell him to be very careful because they do police these p2p networks. Just do a web search on RIAA lawsuits.

That being said, many people do it & get away with it everyday.
