Chicken Fat, at least that's what my departed (very Jewish) mother used to tell me.

We used to say "slicker than snot on a doorknob".

Not the most classiest thing to say, but then again, if it wasn't for low class, I'd have no class at all.

My old boss said it was just de-odorized kerosene.

WD stands for 'water displacement'. It's not really a lubricant. DAMHIKT!
You might think I haven't contributed much to the world, but a large number
of the warning labels on tools can be traced back to things I've done...

wikipedia page. Says it is a trade secret, but then lists the ingredients from the MSDS.

And the "40" is from the 40th attempt at the right formula.

From Wikipedia: "There is a popular, but incorrect, urban legend that the key ingredient in WD-40 is fish oil. The WD-40 web site states that it is a petroleum based product." Snopes also says no.

It's a plot to keep it a secret.

I don't know about a "secret," but here's an article showing the results from a lab analysis:

I had always secretly hoped it was baby seal oil, that way someday I could have gotten a job at the factory passing out the clubs or rain slickers.
