I don't think I want to live in Chile...

An 8.8-magnitude quake hit Chile early this morning, and tsunami warnings have been issued as far away as Russia...

I looked up a list of recorded quakes at 8.5 and above, and there have been thirteen, of which half of them have been in Chile (not to mention two others in Ecuador and Peru). I don't wanna live there... period. The people down there can use our prayers right about now.

It's hard to understand devastation like that.

The destructive power of an 8.8 is unimaginable to me.

      +1 on the prayers.

Same here, it's almost unfathomable to think of what it would be like to have something of that magnatude to hit my area & the aftermath.

On the Richter Scale, each whole number increase corresponds to an increase of about 31.6 times the amount of energy released. Given that it would mean that the earthquake would have close to 60 times the destructive power of the earthquake that hit Haiti(7.0) last month. Hopefully the area that received the most damage won't be as densely populated. Hopefully... My prayers go out to them.

          Prayers for those down there.

Last I saw was 122 deaths; know there'll be more. They are prone to quakes there. The strongest on record was in 1960. Hope the world gets together and send some help.

As of about 9:30 PST the tsunami was up the coast to Acapulco, Mexico. When it gets this far north I'll go to the beach and see if I can get some photos. Foretasted to be about 2' and the headland here is about 100' so it should be safe to watch. If you never hear from me again you'll know it wasn't.

                Bill,
We are not in the safest place ourselves. On Feb 3 there was a 5.9 off of Crescent City. Check out our area and the world at:

This is very true, some experts predict that when the next big one comes, 9.something most everything west of the Cascades will slide down and off the continental shelf. There goes the neighborhood.

I was in Tacoma when the Nisqualy (sp?) quake hit, out house was inline with the shock waves and it felt like I was on a boat. Rather exciting.

I'm getting a mental picture of you, sitting there in that out house while this was going on...

darn spell checker.... should have been our and not out.

my father told stories about tipping over outhouses while growing up in SD. But that's another story.
