    Seven Year Olds' Social Life

My 7-er has a habit of relating her day in a very matter-of-fact way. She acts out the exact emotion and gesture, but does not embellish anything herself.

Last week, she comes up with a gem : "Blake and Jasmine have selected Noah and Michael as their bodyguards. So now if anybody wants to speak to Blake or Jasmine, we need to ask the bodyguards, they check with the girls, and then allow us to speak to them".

This felt hilarious to me, and I kept digging - are they paid anything for this 'job'? No. Did they ask to be bodyguards? No. But they are doing their job nicely? Yup. How come other girls, like you, don't have a bodyguard? Well, I'm not as pretty as them.

That last struck me, and she glances at me and says - "Yeah, I know, you'll say I am, that I'm the prettiest girl in the world, but really Dad, others don't think so." You could have knocked me down with feather, but didn't have anything to say to her.

The next day, she says - I feel sorry for Noah and Michael. They can't do anything, play anything. They just have to wait around the two girls, carrying their bags and following orders !

And two days later, she' back with more - Noah and Michael have quit their jobs. They don't see any value it.. Yippee for male liberation !!

Now I ask her regularly when she's getting her own bodyguards...

That is a hoot! I love young kids--there is no "filter" on when they speak, they pretty much say what's on their minds.

Now my teenagers--got 3 ages 15-19 right now--I'm not sure I really want to know all the details of their social lives. Even if I ask they won't tell me anyway...

That is not what you have to worry about... It's when she tells you that somebody besides you is telling her that she's the prettiest girl in the world... Then you've got a problem...

That's great! I miss when my two were young enough when they came out with gems like that.

I know what you mean. My two year old Molly says the darndest things. She's sharp as a whip, so we keep teaching her more. Right now she's learning a few states, mainly Ohio and Virginia (Her Aunt and Uncle live in Virginia). She also knows that she lives in America.

My wife decided to test her the other day and she asked Molly what country mommy lives in. America she replied. Then she added: Daddy lives in America sometimes too.

My daughter must think I've been traveling to Argentina.

If you want to think that those teenagers are on the square all the time with you. Only ask questions when you can't see the answer on their faces, or Close your eyes until after they have spoken.
