I just had a huge oak tree felled in my back yard. It had been dead for about 3 years. The fellow who cut it down told me that it was ready to be used for lumber. He cut it into four 8-foot logs. He said he could take it to the saw mill for me but did not know how much they would charge to have it cut into planks. Can anyone give me a good estimate for the going prices to cut logs into lumber? I'm assuming they charge by the board-foot but really am not sure. Thanks.

Most mills won't take logs that grow on homeowners' lots. Risk of metal in the wood is high. I ruined a chain last year cutting up a blow down in my yard - there was barbed wire embedded. I also have another tree that is growing around an old spigot. You might need to get a portable mill to come to you.David

You might call some mills in your area and see what their policy is and what they charge. Another idea might be to rent one.
