    Mayo Clinic

My daughter got back from Mayo Clinic in Arizona, Saturday evening. She was quite impressed with the place. People were very friendly and helpful.

After spending 12 days there, they finally gave a diagnosis. It was 1 of 2 possibilities, both involving a muscle. The sciatic (sp.?) nerve runs through a muscle, and that muscle can compress or otherwise irritate the nerve, causing severe pain. That was 1 of the possibilities. The other was a torn muscle, and both problems are treated quite similarly.

The treatment: They gave her an injection into the muscle on Friday. They told her not to expect any relief from it until the middle of this week, and they didn't know how effective it would be. From there, she will be going to the Chicago Rehabilitation Center, which I think is associated with Northwestern. She is feeling really bad today, but hopefully the worst is over.

My mom was telling me the other day about a friend of hers that had developed a nerve problem in her cheek.

The neurologist at a local hospital here in Milwaukee wanted to use a laser to treat the nerve and said it could take months to resolve the problem. She started w/ treatment but saw no improvement after a couple of months. The doctor reminder her that he said it would take several treatments and a long time to solve the problem.

She went to Mayo and they saw her in the morning, operated the next morning, and problem was resolved.

So I'm hoping for a similar outcome for your daughter.
