    Firefox Help

Firefox never seems to work right for me. I have two problems and Googled them, but can not seem to find a solution. Maybe one of the Firefox users here can help.

    1. Firefox does not completely close when I exit. It continues to run in the processes background. I must close it in the task manager (or reboot) before I can re-open it again.

    2. I have selected Firefox as the default browser. Yet when I click a link in an email, it opens the link in a different browser--not Firefox. Maybe there is setting for an html association that also needs to be changed, but I am not sure where to find it.

By the way, I am using XP Pro, SP3. Can anyone help?

    Thanks.

For #1, Check & see if Firefox is running in the background before you actually start it. You may have some program in the startup that uses the default browser for an interface.

as far as #2 goes, that sounds like your mail client has it's own settings for the browser to use, you will have to check it's settings, but you may not be able tochange that one.

      firefox hangs

      Check out this link:
      https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb...s#Hang_at_exit

A few months ago I had the same problem as you did- I had to open Task Manager and delete fiirefox from the applications list before restarting. As I recall my problem had to do with a Java aplet, and it's now fixed and I'm once agian very happy with firefox. You can also try searching the Help tab at the top of the screen when in firefox for other possible solutions.

I have a similar situation. If I'm surfing in Firefox, unless I close each link, they add up in the task manager as a group. I think each one is a tab and is running. I can open the group and click on a specific one and open it, or right click and close it. I can also right click on the group and it will close it down. When it gets to one or two in the group I will get a window asking for "save" or "quit". So to keep the numbers down I've been closing them out as they occur.

I have XP Pro also. If I'm in Firefox and open a link in email it opens in Firefox. If I'm in IE, and go to the same email, the link will open in IE.

It is not running before I start it the first time. It fails to close the process when I shut it down. Then if I try to start it up again I will get an error message that says it is still running and to shut it down before it will start up again.

Cabinetman, I get the same message and I do not save the tabs. On the Email, the link mine always opens in the other browser for me. I check the "associations" in control panel but I could not find anything that stood out.

          Thanks.

I have also had this problem but it seems to vary with the version of Firefox I am using. I am currently using Firefox 3.0.17 and it doesn't happen very often with this version.

The most reliable fix I have found is to open the Windows Task Manager (with Crtl-Alt-Delete), select the "Processes" tab, then search for and close any Firefox lines by highlighting the line and clicking on the "Close Process" button at the bottom of the screen.

            Regards, Steve

I get the same message. Firefox will look like it's not running, but the message says so. I just keep closing it out and starting it up until it opens.

What other browsers are you referring to.

Here are a couple of things to check.

                1) Are any other users logged in and using FF?
                2) Using Task Manager, close all FF processes. Then launch FF again. Does it open two FF windows (faulty mouse)? Or does it open one window but two processes? (possible infection, maybe a bad add-on)
                3) Did you do download anything? Sometimes the "download manager" stays open (but invisible) after you close FF and it appears as a FF process.
                4) Are you up to date on your virus definitions and is your computer clean? A mysterious "extra process" is very suspicious and couple point to a trojan.
                5) Are there any other applications running that might be using FF behind the scenes?

Here's something else I just found that sounds like it may explain the problem:

the only time mine does this is when i have not given the system time to clear the resent history. I have my history etc. cleared each time i close Firefox.

Thank you. That solved problem #1. I checked the "clear history when closing" button and I can restart it right away. It really did not make any difference how long I waited, I would still have to kill the process in order to restart the browser.

Now on to the links in the email. I am using version 3.6 of Firefox. The other browser that I use is Maxthon. It is quite similar to Firefox and actually has a much better organization for bookmarks or favorites. I started using it about 10 years ago when it was called MyIE2. When I have time, I will unload Maxthon to see if it solves the email link problem.

Thanks again master53yoda! That's one I never would have tried.
