A great place to vacation, if you like fishing, boating, or water sports. Some great restaurants, and sights. But to live there, south of Key Largo, only one road in and one road out. It could be devastating in a hurricane, and I don't want to think about their sewage methods.

Yeah,
Great views.
But can you get a decent bagel there.

Fla. Keys
My wife and I lived there for 7 years during the 1990s, on Summerland Key. Summerland Key is about 24 miles from Key West.A great place to vacation, if you like fishing, boating, or water sports. Some great restaurants, and sights. But to live there, south of Key Largo, only one road in and one road out. It could be devastating in a hurricane, and I don't want to think about their sewage methods.

We were there when Andrew hit in 1992. We waited til Sunday morning to leave because of the hurricane. (It hit Homestead on Monday morning).
The traffic leaving was not bad at all. We were on the mainland in about 2 1/2 hrs. That is because they turn both lanes into outbound traffic only, with plenty of police to keep it that way. We crossed Alligator Alley and headed for Rt. 75, to go north to Tampa. The traffic on 75 was a nightmare. They evacuated Ft. Myers, Naples, etc. Took us almost 11 hrs. to get to Tampa.
I am originally from Maryland - home of the best crab cakes in the USA. And you cannot find a decent one in the Keys. I tried numerous times.
But if you like the open warm water - no place better to be.

I used to attend a driving event on Sugarloaf Key (MM 17), East of the bowling alley. I don't know if it's still there but a motel had dolphins/porpoises in a moat that was Gulf fed. It was a free attraction.

Called the Sugarloaf Lodge... It's still there, but I'm not sure they still have the dolphin (big stink a few years back when some activists tried to free the dolphin).Comment
