To each his (or her) own... Just don't forget that many of the world's great engineering marvels were designed and built without the use of computers or slide rules.

The SR-71 Blackbird (the fastest jet airplane ever built) has been mentioned a few times here and I have watched just about all the You Tube video's of it myself so it is that I happened across this little amusing piece from an SR-71 pilot. Enjoy.

Then when your done reading that take a look at the video of some BAD landings of the U2 aircraft. Highly amusing
Not safe for work musical accompaniment. If you don't like songs with profanity in them don't click the link.

That SR-71 encounter is well known in pilot circles. I'm ashamed to say I did something similar to a good friend of ours around ten years ago.

We were two airplanes flying from Stanley, Idaho to Boise for fuel, and then on to the San Francisco Bay Area. My wife and one of her nephews were with me in my Cessna 182 that cruises at about 150 knots and the two friends and their twin boys were in a Cessna 172 that cruised at about 120. Our friends left Stanley first since they were the slower airplane and then we followed. We both called up Air Traffic Control for advisories and about 15 minutes before landing, Boise Departure Control advised us of some traffic ahead and to the side. It had to be our friends and I could see we were passing them. I replied, "Traffic no factor", a comment that quickly led to a rebuke from my wife. A real gentlemen would have acknowledged they were in sight and let it be.

As for the U-2 video, looks like the Dragon Lady does not behave well in strong crosswinds. But it also looks to be a pretty tough bird.
