The printer I hated the most was the HP 5si in the ER.. Darn thing always broke on a Saturday at 11pm so you got the joy of dealing with angry overworked charge nurses.

We have an all in one, b&w laser, at work that seems to be demon possessed. We have an identical unit a few steps further from my office that generally works if you keep paper in it. The devil unit does the sort of stuff described in the humor piece, mainly inventing new error messages and refusing with ferocity to ever forget about its nonsense and print something.
Anybody else remember the "paperless office" discussions? It seems like what electronics really did was make paper easier to generate - so we generate more.

Humor is best BECAUSE of the ring of truth in it.
However, I got tired, of the razor blade companies, teaching the printer companies years ago (remember the Lexmark DCMA lawsuit?), and switched to a laser. Best move I ever made and currently, I send color over to my parents, or take to a copy joint.She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.Comment

I had two of those at a previous job (accounting firm). One of them had the paper input unit go out at about 1.5 million. Took me about 3.5 hours to tear it down, replace the bad unit and rebuild. That same week, I had to do the same thing to an 8100N that we had. It took about 2 hours, since the 5si was a learning experience. The 8100N was the primary networked printer for about 40 accountants and this was during March, so downtime wasn't good. We printed so much that we went through toner cartridges (20k page yeild) in about 1 1/2 days during tax season.

I thought it was funny and I read here and at other forums similar sentiments. However I will have to say that I have not experienced much of this.
Printers to me is like finish on a finely home crafted piece of furniture. Some people spend weeks or months taking care to construct something and want to give 2 to 3 days at the most to finishing.
If one is going to put money into a computer system and expect print to be much of the end result, the printer should has as much thought put into it as the purchase of the CPU unit.
In '89, I purchased a new 300 DPI HP inkjet in the US and brought it back to Japan. My friends here were still on dot matrix. 4 years later when I was ready to go to color inkjet, I traded the HP away and it was an upgrade to the fellow.
I buy a new printer on average every 4 to 5 years. The inkjet printers I purchase usually cost $300 - $400 and similar for laser. I go back to the states for a year every 4 years or so and the printers picks up where it left off when I left without dried ink cartridges or toner problems. My 9 year old Epson 7 color printer just died. $400 for it in '00 and average of 3 sets of ink each year has given me great service. I have a Canon 8 color that my wife has been using for 5 years and it still prints vivid colors. None of these have jammed or had stopped up ink jets. We use Macs primarily but do have Windows (XP) and never had a problem with drivers - Japanese or English.
The Brother laser MFP does jam about once a year or so - but that is usually in humid weather and the office room is hardly used (humidity affects the paper) because we print to it wirelessly and have since '05 both from XP and Mac from the den/living room.
