Three Bowls

And three cats. Feeding time is interesting to watch, as the cats go for their "assigned" bowl. After a few minutes it occurs to them that there may be different food in another bowl. So, it comes time for switcheroo. Hierarchy allows pushing and shoving. You'd think they would learn. Maybe they just have their hopes up.

The dogs do something similar. When I go to mums for dinner, I always take a bowl of my dogs food for her supper time. We feed both mine and mums dogs, usually throwing some mash potato and gravey on top and let them go at it. They always wait until the other is done and then check out the each others dish-just incase something was missed. They have been doing this for the past eight years and the dishes have always been empty.

Our dogs had that problem. Now I separate the bowls. Well actually one did. The lab doesn't really care what bowl he eats from. The odd part is our lab is the dominant one but you'd have to watch for a while to figure that out. The lab mix is a brat until he decides to tell her to stop.

In my youth, when we used to raise beagles, we'd put down a pan of gravy for the puppies. Since their ears were long enough to get in the gravy, eventually one would reach over and bite another's ear. Then the battle would start…

IMHO, cats and learning don't belong in the same sentence. There used to be a Kliban cartoon of a cat staring into a corner intently, with a thought baloon above him that showed just the corner...'nuff said.

Years ago, we had two black standard poodles, that had two pups, one black and one white. When we fed them, the two black adults and the black, female pup would eat together, out of one big bowl. The white, male pup was required to wait a couple of feet away until everyone else was done. He would sit and watch and whimper, until it was his turn.

I suspect, it was a domination thing, since he was male. But, we used to accuse the other dogs of discrimination.
