    Holiday Season Movies

    For the past several years I have played two special movies over the holiday season:
    1. Christmas -- Trading Places, starring Dan Akroyd, Eddie Murphy, Ralph Bellamy, Don Ameche, and Jamie Lee Curtis. I never tire of it.
    2. New Years -- Hank Williams, the Show He Never Gave. If you are a Hank Williams fan as I am, this movie made by the Film Board of Canada has to rank as one of the best movies ever made. Get it.

      You should add Bill Murray's 'Scrooged' to that list. Also 'A Christmas Story'. That is a classic.

          Yes, a Christmas Story belongs also. I had a Red Ryder BB gun and also broke my glasses in the snow, helping putting in a transmission of a friends '35 Ford. (To start it in the cold winter mornings, you built a fire under it).

                  The only one I saw this year was "A Christmas Story". Still a favorite. And I did get a Daisy BB gun one year for Christmas (and almost put my eye out, but that's another story).

                  Well, I haven't seen this movie, but I am very familiar with the story--"Joyeux Noel", in which WW1 German, French and English soldiers put aside their conflict for Christmas Eve. I will have to put this on the queue for next year.

                  John McCutcheon, a great folk singer/musician, wrote a well-known song based on this, "Christmas in the Trenches," and I have heard him sing it live several times. Every time I hear it I get teary-eyed.

                  Interestingly, in Sweden for Christmas almost everyone watches Donald Duck for Christmas (http://www.slate.com/id/2239252/), while in Germany half the population watches an obscure English movie called "Dinner for One" (http://www.slate.com/id/2133551/).

                  To each his own I guess...

                      I still like National Lampoon's "Christmas Vacation". Another good one is "Planes, Trains and Automobiles". Steve Martin & John Candy crack me up in that movie.

                          Iceman, don't you know that's a Thanksgiving movie?!? You can't watch that for Christmas!

                          That is a funny movie--the first time I saw it I laughed til I choked. And it still got me all teary-eyed in the end. I miss John Candy--he was a big-hearted guy.

                          Anyone ever see his last completed movie, Canadian Bacon, where a president low in the ratings decides to invade Canada? (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109370/) Looks like I'll have to add it to the Netflix queue...

                              A little late for this year, but one of my favorite Christmas movies is, "We're No Angels" (the 1955 version with Bogart).

                                  "White Christmas" with Bing Crosby, Danny Kay, Rosemary Clooney and some other chic.
                                  Sometimes the old man passed out and left the am radio on so I got to hear the oldie songs and current event kind of things
