On the hunt for a monitor.

My 19" Viewsonic flat panel died this morning. Went dim for a second, brighened up, then went to black, then nothing but quick 'blips'.

I pulled it tonight and set up an old 15" CRT monitor. Gotta get another monitor ASAP!

Good luck. You might look at a flat screen TV instead of just a monitor. It will have inputs so you can hook the computer up as well as a DVD player, etc.

Dell has a good deal on a nice 23" full-HD LCD Monitor for $158 with free shipping, after applying coupon code 2DNHT11?TTJRT9, through 12/30:

      http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/p...04&sku=ST23102

If that link doesn't work, check out Techbargains.com and look for the link for the Dell 23" monitor.

If you can wait for a bit, Newegg.com will eventually drop the price on some of their Hanns G monitors again. I picked up a pair of very nice Hanns G 23.6" monitors for under $300 just before Black Friday and am thrilled with them.

I recently bought a Toshiba 1080p HDTV that I thought might later be used as a monitor, and only realized afterward that its PC input only supports 720p. So if you take crokett's advice, make sure that not only is the TV 1080p but also that it's PC input supports full resolution.

I have had excellent results from my Acer P215H. It's got good specs, excellent resolution (even for my CAD work), and the video quality is good for a monitor in this price range. Got mine at Office Depot a while back for $219, but see that Buy.com recently was selling them for $139 (and quickly sold out). Lowest price I see right now is $166.50 from some place called STI America. I am well pleased with it, and that's not easy.

You didn't say if your Viewsonic was wide screen or conventional format. If you wind up with a new wide screen format monitor be sure your video card will support that format without distortion.

I've liked the Asus LCD's. Especially the ones w/ built-in speakers (clutter reduction).

Does the ViewSonic have an external AC adapter?

If so, have you eliminated that as the culprit?

D-sub, DVI inputs. No hdmi. seems like the biggest complaint is that the built in speakers are kinda 'tinny'.

Native resolution looks to be 1680 x 1050. Make sure your video card would support this- may need an updated driver.

It is/was conventional. I would just as soon stay with that. I bought it off craigsluist for $50 over a year ago.

I found a guy in SA that has 2 19" Dells and a speaker bar listed for $150. If they are still there, I might go for the deal. There is also a store near work that sells refurbs. 19" run $109 - $129 depending on brand and features.

Just a couple of bits of advice. First, check your desks opening size. Last week, Staples had a 23" for $99 with free shipping (one day only) and Best Buy had a better one for $139 (sold out while I was driving out to it). My brother found a bargain and bought two, only to buy a third, slightly smaller because of that.

The USED prices your showing, you could get new monitors for. You can see your Sunday ads (look at your local sales) at salescircular.com. My mom picked up a 15" at a garage sale (small kitchen desk) for $10. She said she has seen them at thrift stores, inexpensively as well (might be smaller then your wanting but worth a look). You might just look at your video card settings. I don't know how old of computer, but widescreen has been becoming the standard (hard to find the other around here) for a while, and my netbook based notebook (same video specks currently) is driving my (now old) 19" widescreen. (takes up around the same width as the old 17" crt, due to its bezel)
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

If you want 'conventional' (ie, ones with the 4:3 ratio screen size), you end up paying more. I believe that's just because they are getting scarcer.

I bought this 20" Dell in Feb for $329 !

But I was adamant in avoiding widescreen, and this is a fantastic monitor, and it allowed me to attach this sound bar to it ($12 on ebay) that has proved to be great for me - no clutter, and decent enough sound.

I would be hesitant to buy a used LCD monitor. You may never know how long the backlight has been in use. In the only LCD screen I've personally seen fail, the backlight was the issue.

I'm all for saving some scratch when possible, but for just a little more, you could get something like this: http://www.officedepot.com/a/product...-5-Widescreen/

I've never used their monitors, so I can't speak for the quality, but you would at least get a 3 year warranty with it as opposed to buying used. Biggest drawbacks to the one I posted are: VGA only and it doesn't do 1080p.
