Geek Help - Stupid New Router

I got the new router yesterday to replace the old one. Put the new one in, did all the wireless setup, etc. My ISP doesn't use PPoE or anything, just a straight DCHP connection through the DSL modem. Local LAN Access works fine, but I can't get out to the internet on it. It appears to get an IP address on the WAN port but the gateway address is different from what the old router gets. I can ping the WAN port on the new router but can't ping past it to the gateway or the DNS servers. Already tried power cycling everything several times, no joy. Old router works, new one does not. There are no new firmware updates available for the router. I called my ISP, all they said was to call the router folks. I'm assuming it is something wonky with the DHCP client the new router uses. It is properly configured for NAT mode. So, any other ideas before I ship it back? It is not worth it to me to call router support when I can return it and get a different brand that just works.

Oh forgot to add, I tried spoofing the MAC address of the old into the new one, that didn't work. My desktop direct connected to the modem works fine.

Na just return it. Get a different brand. If problem still persists it is a user problem. Try in order... Internal network subnet on client computers matches routers internal subnet. Gateway is defined correctly on client computer (usually the ip address of the router). DNS numbers are correctly entered on client computers. Nat enabled. Those 4 usually are the culprit 99.9% of the time. Also make sure to check the settings on all crazy security settings the router offers.

It seems like my att DSL needed my username and password entered into the router firmware.

Yeah that is what I am thinking. All the internal stuff works fine, I can talk to other machines and manage the router, I just can't get out to the internet with it. I don't need a username or anything on it, should be able to just plug it in and go.

I haven't set up but 3 or 4 home routers, so I'm better at the enterprise stuff (ironic, ain't it). Have you opened up ICMP and just tried to ping known IP addresses? IIRC, 4.2.2.2 will respond to a ping. I think novell.com may also still respond.

Load the DD-WRT firmware on it.

Just a couple things to check. Can you set a fixed gateway address? How about permissions? (some routers have a setting that will allow you to either allow, or disallow all ip, except the ones stated to get to the internet and/or intranet)

My old Asante was this way, I could allow or disallow connections.
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

You can set a fixed gateway, but it requires a fixed IP also. Tried that using the settings from the old router already, then the router couldn't get a connection at all.

The router does allow/disallow traffic on per-host basis but all the hosts were allowed. I already checked that.

Yeah I thought about DD-WRT. The router supposedly supports it but I've wasted enough cycles on this already. I was just wondering if there was something I missed.

I ping www.yahoo.com. This not only tests network connectivity but also DNS connectivity. Don't know if windows ping will do a network resolve but the GNU/Linux version will.

Literally just got done fighting that issue on mine this morning. Try setting up your network unsecured.
I am converting everything of mine over to apple, but my uncle is here and couldn't get his HP to see the internet. He could see the network no prob, but not the internet. Long story short: after unsecuring my network he got on no prob.

THis is almost like asking if the circular saw blade is on the right direction but, have you turned EVERYTHING off so that modem & router can both interigate & recognise each other?

Yes I have. The router gets an IP address it is just an incorrect one somehow.

I'll bet the DD-WRT firmware would fix you up in about five minutes. Certainly less time than it would take to send this one back, get another one, and setup that one up.

One more question, did you spoof the mac when you had the old gateway settings and IP address?

Yup. Still same problem. Got an IP address but it still didn't work. I may play with dd-wrt. I have the old router functional and can mess with the new one as I need to.
