My kids got me the audio book version of Carlin's new "sortabiography", "Last Words". It was cowritten with Tony Hendra and was recorded by his older brother Patrick. I listened to it as I was driving between home, the Twin Cities and Madison over the holiday.
It is a fascinating book. I did not know how dysfunctional his family was, but hearing him describe his difficult upbringing with his trademark dry humor was enlightening. It explained a lot about where he got his view on life.
Of course, it's not for the faint-hearted, or those allergic to bad words, or the easily offended, or those without a sense of humor, etc., etc. It's also not a laugh-a-minute, but it is an entertaining observation on his neighborhood growing up, the early stand-up business, and how his stand-up act evolved over time.
