We're moving another load of stuff, including some of the remaining piles of ash, walnut and cherry that I've picked up over the last few years. I lifted a wide but thin piece of ash and found piles of talcum-fine dust underneath. There were characteristic pinholes on both sides, and two more layers of lumber underneath are also infested. It appears the cherry and walnut are untouched. That means it can be only one insect - the dreaded powder post beetle.
My cousin's husband has a Ph.D. in entymology so I'm waiting for some expert advice but doing a little reading on the net, it appears heat is not the best way to rid the wood of these pests. Instead, the recommendation is to treat with one of two products that are essentially boron in solution. According to one article published by a university in Kentucky, treatment with Bora-care or Timbor should not affect finish when applied.
Another alternative is methyl bromide. No thanks. The stuff is highly toxic.
