    Little did I know

    Well, I've always known that a 2x4 was not actually 2"x4" and I've known that a 1 X 6 X 2, was not actually 1" X 6", but I guess I did not know that a 1/4 inch piece of birch plywood was not actually 1/4 inch.

I always thought that plywood was measured exactly, but now I know.

Most plywood is not made in USA and actually has metric thickness. Most 1/4" ply is actually 5.2 mm thick rather than 6.35mm, 1/2" ply is 12mm and 3/4" ply is 18mm. That is why they sell "undersized router bits for plywood" to cut groves that provide better fit than standard bits.

The 1/4" I have gotten lately was not even 5.2mm, I think it may have been before it was pressed. The undersized bits that I have are really useless as they are either too big or small for whatever I can get locally.

and speaking of size a joke:
It's their wedding night and the bride is standing at the foot of the bed looking at the new groom saying "I should have known, what with you being a fisherman!"

I think plywood manufactures wives think the same thing

Some plywood distributors carry full thickness stock. There are domestic brands of hardwood plywood that have an 'A' face veneer of .0625 (1/16"). If you buy plywood at a home center, the sheets could vary in overall and face veneer thickness.

If similarity and matching is necessary, some distributors can carry sequenced, and bookmatched and sequenced sheets.
