    Movie Soundtrack Favorites

Okay, staring this to see if anyone else has some suggestions for good movie soundtracks

the 2009 Star Trek soundtrack is one of the best that I have heard in a very long time...

if you are a fan of big ballsy brass and ostenato patterns, you will want to get a copy of this, and turn it up to 11...

any one else out there got any reccomendations? ( and the a reason or two behind them?)

I recall hearing Lee Marvin sing "I Was Born Under a Wandering Star" many years ago (I think it was on Tonight/Johnny Carson). Talk about a baritone...

Mr. Holland's Opus had a great soundtrack. Was the first movie that SWMBO and I saw together. However, it would take one heckuva high school band to play some of the stuff the movie had in it.

At the time it came out, I was a music ed major about 1 year or so from getting my degree and becoming a band director. That's one of the reasones why I enjoyed the movie so much.

The music from Star Wars, especially Empire Strikes Back, is very good. Usually anything by John Williams is great. I've seen the movies so many times that they play in my head when I listen to the soundtrack.

Braveheart is good if you like a lot of percussion rhythms mixed in the orchestra.

One movie soundtrack that I have in my library that I like a lot is the one from "Escape from New York". (You know... Kurt "Call Me 'Snake'..." Russell...). Some of John Carpenter's very edgy musical work.

Sounds like you're more interested in hearing recommendations for instrumental soundtracks specifically written for the movie rather than existing songs compiled for a soundtrack. Those aren't really my cup of tea, so here's the soundtracks I have and listen to:
              • Reservoir Dogs -great 70's one hit wonders
              • Pulp Fiction -great collection of oldies and surf tunes
              • Kill Bill -seeing a pattern here? Tarantino really knows how to put a diverse bunch of old music together!
              • Another vote for O Brother Where Art Thou
              • Purple Rain -sorry, I was a teen in the 80's

actually, I'm game for anything, I am currently enjoying the transformers non-instrumental soundtrack collection

Another great sountrack that I like is the one from "The Incredibles"

If you consider musicals, Les Miserables is my favorite of all time. Then The Secret Garden, then The Who's Tommy.

But for movies, here's my list:
                  Braveheart
                  Last of the Mohicans
LOTR (Lord of the Rings, for the lay people out there)
                  Star Wars (actually pretty good)
                  Crimson Tide
                  Labrynth
                  Legend
                  Office Space
Amadeus (kind of a cheat, but hey)
                  Slumdog Millionaire
U2: Rattle and Hum (it counts, since it's a documentry)
Birdy (Basically just instrumental pieces of Peter Gabriel's more commercial work, but still excellent)
Peter Gabriel's "Passion" (the Soundtrack to Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ)
                  The Hunt for Red October
                  Beyond the Mind's Eye
                  Grosse Pointe Blank
Trainspotting (both Volume 1 and Volume 2)

I have another 50-60 at home, but I can't think of them now.

                        There's a lot, but I suppose the

opening theme to "Inglorious Bas$#@*%" is by far my favorite. I think Dimitri Toimens (?) did that score.

I have a friend who is very partial to Phantom. I prefer Les Miserables. When we were in college, my wife & I (then fiance) went to Les Miserable in London at the Globe. I don't think it was the original cast, but, still...awesome.
