    Need a Nerd!

OK, oh wise BTers, here's the problem: I have a file a student gave me which is in MS Works format (she has no clue what version) that I need converted into some other file format; Word, Pages, RTF, text, whatever.

In the past I've used a web site that has since disappeared. I'm not too eager to pay $80 for MacLink Plus if I can find a relatively cost-free method. Every word processor I've tried (Pages, Word 2000, Nisus, OpenOffice, even TextEdit and BBEdit) won't do the trick.

    Any suggestions????

When you tried with Microsoft Word were Works .wps files listed at the end of the list in the open dialog box under the 'Files of type'?

Can you open it in Word as it is? IF so, then highlight the text and do a copy paste to which other program you want.

Oh, just saw that you wrote "WORKS". I don't envy you!

        Try the MS Works viewer

It's free, but I expect it's Windows only. Does it have to open on a Mac?

Also, Word may need to have the import filters installed to open it. A HEX editor may let you see in the file to find out what version or Works generated it.

        Bill, still asleep over here.

How soon do you need it? Can she open it at home and resave in RTF? Could she email it to you?
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

What is the extension? Shouldn't Word open it without any extra conversion?
