    Surgery

After years of nagging from SWMBO, I went for a physical earlier this year. First physical in probably 8 to 10 years. Anyway, my new doc sent me to a sleep specialist who diagnosed me with sleep apnea. Did the sleep study...can't handle a CPAP machine...I freak out with stuff on my face. I literally had 2 or 3 full blown panic attacks over a 2 hour period. Tried different attachments to no avail. Nurse sent me home at midnight, since there was no need for them to continue the 2nd study when I couldn't handle the machine.

Sleep doc then sent me to an ENT. Of course, I have a deviated septum (don't we all), but according to the ENT, I also have a longer than usual uvula (isn't that a good thing ). On top of that, the sinus caveties behind the nose/eye area are litteraly 1/2 clogged up with solid material, which may explain the chronic sinus infections. I imagine quite a bit of that is saw dust, since I also freak out with anything like a dust mask covering the nose/mouth.

Earlier today, I scheduled the "roto-rootering" for Veteran's Day. They will trim the uvula, suction out the sinus caveties and fix the septum, all under general anasthesia. Thanks to his schedule and mine, I should only have to miss 2 days of work. The ENT seems very optimistic that this should take care of most, if not all the apnea. Good thing too, since the next surgery would involve an oral surgeon, breaking and relocating lower jaw, and looking like I went 10 rounds with Holyfield for several months. Aside from the pain, the oral surgery scares me because they said I could lose the feeling in the lower part of my face for a long time. Could be a problem if I ever wanted to play trumpet again.

Oh yeah, my wife never complains about me snoring. She complains about some idiot who keeps setting up a saw mill in the bedroom about bed time every night. She said she's tired of rehanging the pictures.

Wow, that sounds like quite a bit of work.

BUT, I think if I had the choice of wearing one of those masks, or just getting things "fixed," I'd go for the fix.

    Good luck!

Best of luck with the surgery. I hope it makes life a lot easier for you.

You mentioned snoring. Have you tried the "Breathe Right" strips? I seem to have periods where I snore, and periods when I don't. The strips really help me.

Do you know about kickback? Ray has a good writeup here... https://www.sawdustzone.org/articles...mare-explained

Ed, they helped on occasion, but I found them more irritating than anything. Plus, as oily as my skin is, they would fall off in the middle of the night. I would wake up the next morning with the strip attached to my body in some places I wouldn't expect.

The 'easy fix' may just do it for you. I hate to think how many board feet of lumber I've packed away.

Sleep apnea is no small problem. It raises your blood pressure and can lead to premature death. My wife has it and now sleeps with a CPAP machine.

Hopefully the sinus surgery will work.

Sounds like an inside-out facelift... Will it make you look better?

As for me, ain't nobody goin' near my uvula with no scalpel...

On the serious side, don't worry about a thing... There's some amazing things going on in ENT surgery these days. Seen it firsthand.

I have the nasal pillows, one per nostril. And the big tube going over my head from the back. Its been so long that I really can't remember sleeping without the cpap. There are two main side effects - 1. my wife can now sleep without going deaf. 2. My side doesn't hurt any more from being poked and told to breathe. For the first few nights, my wife almost poked me to see if I was still alive - the change was that quick and that dramatic.

Uncle C, I don't think there is a doctor that talented in this town.

LOL! Can't blame 'em for daring to dream big, though...
