That was on the news this morning. I made a comment to LOML that at 37,000 feet it would be pretty easy to miss seeing an airport (excluding gauges, radar, etc).

Bad software update on the TomTom?

Seriously, I don't see how that is possible. Heck, even in the '90s when I was taking pilot lessons, the autopilot, radios and maps gave away where airports are.

I could see missing an approach, but missing the airport by 150 miles...you've got me.

Hasn't Northwest had some other issues lately? I could have sworn I have read or heard bout some other things happening.

Supposedly they were having an "animated discussion" (read argument) about company policy.

I did land at the wrong airport once, at night, in an area I was not familiar with (Amarillo, Texas), and long before the days of GPS. In metropolitan areas, it's not that difficult to mistakenly identify certain smaller airports or even confuse streets and runways. But it appears these guys were not paying attention to the business at hand.

Interesting to see what happens to the cockpit voice recording for this flight... (looks around for Richard Nixon )

It might, except for the ATC guys yelling at you and telling you to land. Plus if they were landing they would be considerably lower than 37,000 feet. There is no excuse for them to miss the airport, not with all the modern technology they have today.

Visually looking for an airport at 37K ft was a funny. OK, here's a possibility. All their electronics went out, and the pilot had to visually look for the airport. Maybe he flew low enough to hang out the window to get a better view. So, @ 600 MPH it only took 15 minutes to miss the AP. Wind in the face musta been incredible.

Several "experts" on the radio/TV had said their excuse is bogus.

A more likely scenario: One of them allowed the other to catch some Z's (not allowed but apparently happens all the time) and then himself fell asleep (so both pilots asleep).

My understanding is that Northwest is going to be charging the passengers a "scenic route" fee...

Don't want the scenic route? Then there will be an "expedited travel time" fee.

Exactly. And that's what the cockpit voice recorder will probably show as well.

The article said they were unresponsive from western Kansas to the middle of Wisconsin. They must have been awfully mad about the policy change of giving out peanuts and pretzels for free again to argue for that long (NWA had cut that out before being purchased by Delta).

As for the recent other bad news, a Delta flight landed on a Taxiway rather than the runway down in Atlanta recently, maybe that's what you were thinking about?

C'mon you never had an argument with your wife/gf over the phone and missed an exit on the freeway. This is the same thing
