I had my hearing aids fitted this morning and am amazed at the difference that they make. So far it doesn't look like there is going to be any problem getting used to them. I should have done this 20 years ago.

I'm sure Dick will be telling everyone to stop yelling at him now.
Back when my FIL got his new "ears", he sounded a lot louder to himself so we had to keep telling him to speak up.From the "deep south" part of Canada

Good for you, Dick! (Just remember where the "Off" switch is, for those times that you prefer peace and quiet...

That's great! When you first mentioned it, I was skeptical because my dad got one (probably 20 + years ago) and when I tried it out, it sounded like an am station with a lot of interference! His was probably a cheap model. Between that and the ensuing 20 years of improvements, sounds like they got it down pat!You don't need a parachute to skydive, you only need a parachute to skydive twice.Comment

Pardon me?Originally posted by WhalerI had my hearing aids fitted this morning and am amazed at the difference that they make. So far it doesn't look like there is going to be any problem getting used to them. I should have done this 20 years ago.
A neighbor had a new set of the latest digital aids fitted recently. I asked him what they had cost - he replied "Twenty-past twelve."
Seriously, Dick - enjoy - I'm delighted for you!

You will be back. Most practitioners will have you return in a couple of months for the first level of adjustments. Then there is usually a second and a third level as you get used to having hearing aids. I go for third level next week, and also a complete retest. But first, the tech will - yet again, test and replace the speaker that goes in the ear. Ear wax and whatever else lives in there is a hostile environment for delicate electronics. And, I keep mine in a jar full of desiccant every night - ask about it at your next visit!!
The best result I had was going to see 'Crystal Skull' and actually being able to make out ALL of the dialog in an almost empty theatre with the volume cranked up (the aid automatically clamped down on the overly loud stuff). I had to get adjusted for tromping around in the trees with a floppy hat - you wouldn't believe the feedback you get pushing your head through the low lying canopy.
Be warned. Most mall food courts are a hearing aid nightmare - most of the people I have coffee with either turn them off or take them out. And for those that love casinos - not a hearing aid friendly environment. I was in Vegas for a course the first week I had hearing aids - I learned to leave them out until after I had breakfast and was in the classroom.
Anyway, best of luck. And. Try not to point to your close friends and relatives that they need them too - they already know this and and are still coming to terms with what they see as something to be avoided. However, you will be astounded at how many people you know who should have them.Comment
