    "Fences"

Check out this free software http://www.stardock.com/products/fences/ . It allows you to put "fences" on your desktop, to keep things uncluttered. You can make as many as you want. Here's a screenshot of my desktop. Click on image to see it larger.

I like it a lot. The best is that once all your icons are 'fenced', you can make all of them disappear with a double-click somewhere on the desktop, for a completely icon-free desktop. Another double-click brings them back.

The only issue is that while it works well for me on two machines, it stopped functioning on my laptop once I upgraded versions. Dunno if it's the laptop or the software, but I miss it already.

Btw, Stardock has a number of other similar software.

Hmmm, what comes around goes around I suppose. Anyone rememeber Windows 3.1? It grouped similar programs into group windows. I always thought it made sense and wondered why it went away in later versions.

Program groups didn't go away completely - they just got buried. If you go through Start, Programs, and right click then open a program folder, you get the same kind of group window layout.

I like the concept of this fence version - making the group background transparent is a nice feature.
